🏞 “Campo Imperatore: Italy’s Little Tibet” 🏔
#holidayitinerary
Perched high in the Gran Sasso d’Italia at over 2,100 meters, Campo Imperatore is a vast alpine plateau where sky and earth meet in a quiet, endless embrace. Nicknamed “Little Tibet”, it’s a place where the air feels sharper, the light brighter, and solitude deeper.
✨ Why It’s Worth the Trip (Especially Solo)
• Unreal landscapes – Rolling grasslands framed by jagged peaks.
• Endless hiking trails – From gentle strolls to challenging mountain routes.
• Starry nights – One of the best spots in Italy for stargazing.
📜 A Little Background
Campo Imperatore has been a grazing ground since ancient times, a route for shepherds during the seasonal transhumance. In modern history, it’s also famous for being where Mussolini was held prisoner in 1943 before a daring rescue. Today, it’s a mecca for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers.
👣 My Solo Adventure
I arrived early, the plateau still wrapped in morning mist. The silence was absolute — broken only by the soft ringing of cowbells in the distance. Walking along the grassy expanse, every turn revealed a different view: rocky outcrops, wildflowers swaying in the wind, and peaks that seemed to scrape the sky.
After a short trek toward Monte Portella, I sat on a rock, unpacked a simple picnic, and let the panorama sink in. There’s a feeling here — hard to explain — of being very small, yet completely at peace.
In the late afternoon, the colors changed: the grass glowed gold, the shadows lengthened, and the chill reminded me I was standing in the heart of Abruzzo’s high mountains.
💡 Tip: Bring layers — even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly. If you have time, stay until nightfall to watch the Milky Way bloom overhead.
