Why Colombia’s Coffee Region Was the Unexpected Highlight of My Trip
When I planned my trip to Colombia, I expected to fall in love with the big names Medellín’s energy, Cartagena’s colonial charm, or Bogotá’s culture. But it was Eje Cafetero, the country’s coffee-growing heartland, that completely stole the show.
📍Located in the central Andes, this region is more than just coffee - it’s a lush, vibrant, and deeply peaceful part of Colombia that feels worlds away from the chaos of city life. If you’re planning a trip and craving nature, authenticity, and a slower pace, let me tell you about Salento, Cocora Valley, and Filandia.
☕️ Salento is where most travelers start, and for good reason. With its colorful balconies, cobblestone streets, and endless mountain views, it looks like something straight out of a painting. But Salento isn’t just beautiful - it’s also full of soul.
Mornings here start with the smell of fresh arepas and local coffee wafting through the streets. I spent hours just wandering around, popping into artisan shops, chatting with locals, and enjoying the slow rhythm of life.
🐴 The highlight of my time in Eje Cafetero? Without question - riding a horse through the Cocora Valley. I’ll never forget the feeling of being surrounded by towering wax palms, Colombia’s national tree and the tallest palm species in the world, reaching skyward through misty clouds. It’s like stepping into a dream or a fantasy novel - surreal, otherworldly, and completely humbling.
The horseback ride added another layer to the experience - we crossed rivers, climbed muddy trails through the cloud forest, and trotted across wide-open meadows. If you’re even slightly adventurous, this is the kind of experience that will stay with you for years.
🌄 Filandia is the hidden gem you didn’t know you needed. Located just 40 minutes from Salento, Filandia offers a similar colonial charm but with fewer tourists and a more local feel. The mirador (viewpoint) in Filandia offers panoramic views over rolling green hills, coffee farms, and forest - the kind of scene that reminds you why you travel in the first place. I sat in the main plaza one evening with a coffee in hand, surrounded by locals, music, and the smell of food being cooked in street stalls.
If I had to recommend just one region, it would be Eje Cafetero. Disconnect from the noise, breathe in the fresh mountain air, ride horses through enchanted valleys, and connect with a side of Colombia that feels both timeless and deeply alive.
