Located 117 kilometers south of the capital Sofia, in the Rila Mountains, the highest mountain in the Balkan Peninsula, with an altitude of 1,147 meters.
In the early 14th century, Rila Monastery was destroyed by an earthquake. Later the monastery was rebuilt and a strong castle was built. The last reconstruction was between 1834 and 1860. Inside it are still preserved the remains of the medieval monastery and the monument of St. John of Rila. It was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
