Otherworldly landscapes in Japan
Exploring the incredible natural beauty around Sendai and Sapporo, finding moments of serenity.
1. Matsushima
- accessible by subway from Sendai, takes around 40 mins
- eat 🦪 by the sea, explore the islands connected by bridge by foot, or take a boat to see the wider area. Walk further along the coast away from the main area to find quieter scenic spots like this one!
2. Yamadera, Yamagata
- accessible by train from Sendai, around 60 mins.
- the hike to the temple takes around an hour, and is well-maintained steps the entire way, with plenty to look at along the way
- recommend the small restaurant by the station after the hike (note that it closes at 2 or 3!), our meals were delicious!
3. Noboribetsu
- take the train from Sapporo, about an hour and a half.
- the trail paths are short and very accessible to all, so don’t expect to hike for the full day!
- relax in an onsen and enjoy the #hotsprings !

Sekisui Heim Super Arena
The venue was nice and it was easy to see the stage. I had purchased a parking lot ticket a in advance, but I just parked without looking at the parking lot guide. It took me an hour to get back on the public road. I wish they could have guided me a little better. It's on top of a mountain and there are no convenience stores nearby, so you have to buy food and drinks in advance.
The Matsushima Umanose 馬の背
Very beautiful place with a nice view over the bay. We took the train from Sendai Station to Rikuzen-Hamada Station, which takes about 35 minutes. We then walked the rest branching off of the big road next to the station as soon as we could. The walk through the forest is very nice, the trees provided very needed shadow on this hot summer day. There is a little bit of parking at the entrance, so if you have a car, you can drive very close. The last bit is a little hike down to the water and then across the natural bridge.
The Zaijo Island 在城島
It was a great experience! A great nature that you’ll enjoy with your family and friends! The story was When Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai clan, held a moon-viewing party on this island, his vassals heard him playfully say, "If you can see as far as the eye can see, you won't have to worry about the castle falling." It is said that the island came to be called at least the island of the island and the island of the castle.
