Kunming Station Tips
#ChinaTravelMoment
It took about three hours to get from Lijiang to Kunming Station.
Kunming Station is really crowded, and the lines are incredibly long because they check IDs at every ticket gate. Here's a tip: if you're a foreigner, you might have to get in line again because your passport won't be recognized even if you stand in the same line as the locals. Most passports are recognized on the right or left side, so it's faster if you go to the side.

I booked a premium seat on China High Speed Rail through Trip.com!
I booked a first-class seat on the China High Speed Rail on Trip.com!
I was skeptical about whether it was really possible to reserve a ticket on the Chinese High Speed Rail, but it was easier than reserving a Shinkansen ticket!
It's also great that you can board the train with just your passport (or ID). I hope Japan will follow suit with this digitalization.
Is the first-class seat the equivalent of a green car on the Japanese Shinkansen?
The distance from Dali to Kunming is 300km and 2 hours, which is the equivalent distance from Tokyo to Nagoya on the Tokaido Shinkansen. For this distance, the Nozomi Shinkansen costs over 10,000 yen, but on the China High Speed Rail, even a first-class seat costs only 6,000 yen, which is about half the price in Japan, so I splurged on this rare opportunity.
The conductor brought me free water and snacks on the train, and the seats were spacious and very comfortable.
On the downside, even in the first-class seats, the seats and windows didn't line up very well, and there was a glass partition in front of me, so I couldn't stretch my legs. I thought this was typical of China. But overall, I highly recommend it.

Want to go to Hong Kong to eat dim sum, take Ding Ding, and go shopping in Central
Kunming Station is the center of Kunming City. The traffic around it is quite congested. If you take a taxi, you may have to be prepared to walk for a while. The station itself requires you to go up to the waiting area first and then wait to go downstairs to the platform. Although there are escalators, it will be troublesome to go up and down if you carry too much luggage. There are more than ten platforms on the waiting floor, and the platforms will open for ticket checking 30 minutes before the train departs. There are many dining options on the waiting platform, and they are not significantly more expensive than outside. You can buy food at the station and enjoy it on the train.
