sebastian_ambrose_thornfield De'anli: A century-old family style in the ancient charm of Chaoshan.
On the Chaoshan land in Jieyang, Guangdong, there is a village known as the "first ancient village in Chaoshan", De'anli, which is like a bright pearl inlaid in the long river of history. The bluestone path winds through the ancient lanes, and on both sides are ancient buildings that have experienced vicissitudes. Every brick and tile carries the story of the years, telling the family style and inheritance of a hundred years. Stepping into De'anli is like stepping into a vivid picture scroll. The antique courtyards are arranged in a scattered manner, with flying eaves and corners, carved beams and painted buildings, and every detail reveals the profound cultural heritage of Chaoshan. The courtyard is deep, the ancient trees are towering, and the mottled light and shadow are jumping on the stone slab, as if telling the glory and brilliance of the past. This is not only a group of ancient buildings, but also a living museum, collecting the wisdom and emotions of Chaoshan people. De'anli witnessed the rise and fall of the family, and also carried the essence of Chaoshan culture. Every stele and mural is a witness to history, allowing people to feel the passage of time and the continuation of culture while walking. De'anli is a microcosm of Chaoshan culture, the warmth of home, and the sustenance of homesickness. It tells the story of this land in a quiet and deep way, waiting for everyone who seeks roots and asks ancestors, explores ancient visits, to come here to listen and to realize.
De An Li, a gem of the Chaoshan region, is a must-see when visiting Puning!
De An Li, a mansion and ancient village with a history dating back to the 10th year of the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (1871), stands proudly with its unique Chaoshan-style enclosed village. The winding, deep lanes are paved with bluestone slabs, the roofs are covered with black tiles, and the white walls reflect the sun. Despite the centuries of wind and frost, it still retains its simplicity and purity. This ancient village is ingeniously divided into three major areas: old, middle, and new. Each area is centered around a solemn ancestral hall, with the other buildings scattered around it, forming a magnificent picture of "a hundred birds facing the phoenix" and "a four-horse chariot", which profoundly demonstrates the strict order and harmonious coexistence of Chaoshan clan culture.
Stepping into the heart of the old village - the museum, a strong Chaoshan "lotus" cultural atmosphere hits you. This is not only a treasure trove of historical memories, but also a palace of artistic treasures. Visitors can savor the warmth of porcelain, the elegance of tea sets, and the prosperity of sedan chairs. Each exhibit tells the story of Chaoshan's past glory and style, as if you have traveled back to an era intertwined with tradition and folklore.
The art galleries and art museums of De An Li are another artistic feast. The melodious melody of classical music echoes here, and the ink fragrance of calligraphy and painting art is overflowing, leading people into an elegant cultural palace. In addition, why not experience the essence of Chaoshan culture - "Kung Fu Tea" in person? In the lingering tea fragrance, feel the unique charm and leisure, and let your soul be deeply baptized and sublimated.

—
Avoiding the bustling crowds, I visited this grand and well-preserved large-scale mansion-style residential complex in the Chaoshan area during off-peak hours.
Its style is completely different from the 'Forbidden City,' yet, like the 'Forbidden City,' it has perfectly preserved the local architectural art and cultural relics.
The architectural layout of De'anli follows the characteristics of Chaoshan residential buildings—'houses are neatly aligned, arranged in an orderly manner, with appropriate spacing,' 'blue bricks, white walls, and black tiles, with a simple and natural appearance,' 'featuring the representative five-element gables and door heads of Chaoshan, which are exquisite.' The scattered large trees in the courtyards, with their dark branches in this season, add a lot of 'story feeling' to the entire courtyard, fully displaying a desolate state.
What is worth savoring in De'anli is not only the charm of its architecture but also the antiques and cultural relics preserved in each courtyard. Personally, I especially love the various wooden furniture and wood carvings, which are vintage and exquisite. Upon careful exploration, they are indeed very interesting. When the ancient mansion meets old objects, time seems to intertwine instantly, and many imaginations arise in the mind!
De'anli is undoubtedly a museum rich in Chaoshan culture. On such a sunny afternoon, wandering through the folk customs and arts of Chaoshan is indeed a great enjoyment!
When you come to Puning, you must come here to take a walk and have a look!

Great Places to Visit in Puning | Puning Yunshiyan Mountain⛰️|| Yunshiyan is truly a hidden gem for a fun outing~
As one of the eight scenic spots in Puning, Yunshiyan boasts a Buddhist holy site. Coming here to listen to the bell sounds and pray🙏🏻, admiring the beautiful and magnificent rocky mountain scenery, makes one feel peaceful🪷 and at ease❗
🅿️ Parking is free💰, no admission fee is required, and you can follow the navigation to drive to the foot of the mountain. The road is not difficult to drive on. I went there in the afternoon of the third day of the new year, and there were plenty of parking spaces.
The mountain is not high, but the path behind the Daxiong Hall, climbing over rocks and dirt roads, is rather steep.
Hiking version:
Those with physical strength can take the small path on the left side of the hall up the mountain, and then walk down from the top of the mountain back to the parking lot🅿️
Leisure version:
Take the road on the right side of the temple up and down the mountain, and return the same way.
When the weather is clear, the mountain scenery is very good, with a broad view, and it's very photogenic~ Plus, there are not too many tourists, making the experience super great👍🏻

Jieyang, Guangdong | De'anli
| De'anli.
Tired of the hustle and bustle of the city? Come and see the charming ancient village!
De'anli is located in Nancun, Hongyang Town, Gucheng, Puning City, Guangdong Province. It was built by the family of Fang Yao, the admiral of the Guangdong navy and a famous general at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and his brothers. It is the largest, best-preserved, and longest historical period of the giant mansion-style building complex in the Chaoshan area, and it is also a rare mansion-style ancient village in China.
De'anli's architecture encompasses the entirety of Chaoshan residential architecture: grand ancestral halls, three-hall compounds, five-bay houses, four-point gold, descending tigers, horse-drawn carriages, five-wall connections, one-legged lions, etc. Architectural forms that are rare or unseen in Chaoshan can all be found here.
The entire architectural complex of De'anli is organically composed of three parts, each part being an independent and complete architectural group with its own characteristics. One group is 'hundreds of birds facing the phoenix', and two groups are 'horse-drawn carriages', each group containing multiple independent structures that are distinct yet organically connected.
De'anli's old and middle villages face from west to east, and the new village faces from north to south. The architectural pattern of the old village is 'hundreds of birds facing the phoenix', and the middle and new villages are 'horse-drawn carriages'. The architectural form retains the typical characteristics of Chaoshan villages in the late Qing Dynasty, and there are also Western-style buildings in the village, showing both inheritance and development.
Although De'anli has undergone tremendous changes, the overall architecture is relatively well-preserved. Its scale, construction precision, completeness of styles, and beauty of forms are considered the quintessence of Chaoshan architectural art. With its rare architectural layout and unique design style, it has been included in the civil architecture textbooks of the School of Architecture at South China University of Technology.
De'anli's architecture is a combination of art and science, with the most typical example being the village's drainage system. It adopts the traditional open ditch method, flowing through 'nine turns and eighteen bends' before finally converging into the stream in front of the village, passing through Baili Bridge and flowing into the Rong River. Another feature of De'anli's drainage system is that whether the water flows out from the patio or from the tributary into the middle ditch and then into the large ditch, the water always flows from the center, which in Chinese is 'yan', symbolizing endless life and prosperity for generations.
Visiting time is about 1 hour! You can park your car inside

The Complete Collection of Chaozhou Residential Architecture - De'anli
Guangdong Trip No.20 - Puning De'anli
🏯Historic Site Name: De'anli
📌Address: Nancun, Hongyang Town, Gucheng, Puning City, Jieyang City, Guangdong Province
🏛Cultural Protection Level: 5th batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Protection in 2008
🎫Admission Fee: 🆓
🚗After getting a car from Shantou, our self-driving tour in Southern Guangdong finally began!
🏯Getting off the highway at Puning, we were completely attracted by the ancient buildings by the roadside and decided to get off the highway to explore. Unexpectedly, this whim led us into a century-old architectural complex known as the 'Chaozhou Residential Museum' - De'anli.
🏠This little-known ancient village was built by the family of Fang Yao, the late Qing Dynasty naval commander and famous general of Guangdong, and his brothers. It has a history of 150 years and is the largest and most well-preserved large-scale mansion-style residential building complex in the Chaozhou area.
🏡De'anli was built in the tenth year of the Tongzhi era (1871 AD), and since it was a family residence, the entire complex took 20 years to complete. Its grand scale, intricate construction, and exquisite design are considered masterpieces of Chaozhou residential architecture. Even after 150 years of weathering, the descendants of the Fang family still live here, thriving from generation to generation...
🏚De'anli encompasses the complete collection of Chaozhou residential architecture, including various architectural forms: large ancestral halls, three halls, five rooms, four-point gold, descending tiger, four-horse carriage, five-wall connection, one-legged lion, and even rare architectural forms in the Chaozhou area. As such, De'anli is regarded as the 'Complete Collection of Chaozhou Residential Architectural Forms' and is considered a museum of Lingnan architectural decorative art.
🏣The De'anli architectural complex covers a total area of nearly 60,000 square meters, divided into several areas including the old fort, middle fort, new De'anli, and Shaoyuan. Among them, the architectural layout of the old fort is 'hundreds of birds facing the phoenix', and the middle fort and new De'anli are 'four horses pulling a carriage'. The three forts are connected, with a total of 773 rooms.
🏘De'anli's drainage system is also remarkable - the traditional open channel method, after 'nine turns and eighteen bends', eventually flows into the stream in front of the fort, through Baili Bridge, and into the Rong River. It is amazing that in this drainage system, whether the water flows out from the patio or from the tributary into the middle ditch and then into the large ditch, the water always flows through the middle. Water flowing through the middle is the Chinese character - '衍', which means endless and thriving for thousands of generations.
Long streets, deep alleys, red doors, high walls... Time seems to flow backward;
Halls, pavilions, carved beams, painted rafters, wooden doors, flower windows... In a blink of an eye, it's already been a thousand years;
De'anli, I'm glad I didn't miss you!

Puning Travel | Experience the taste of the old days in Xilong Village
🔸It is only when you come to Puning in Jieyang that you realize there is a lantern village hidden here. In this place, every household makes a living by crafting bamboo strip lanterns. It is said that this craft started in the Ming Dynasty and has been passed down for hundreds of years.
🏮The lanterns come in a variety of shapes, including square lanterns, lotus seedpod lanterns, pearl lanterns, concave belly lanterns, gourd lanterns, and vase shapes, and the characters on the lanterns are customized, which can be blessings or the surname of the family.
👋Because they are made entirely by hand and involve many steps (including weaving, pasting paper, coloring, and applying tung oil), they take a long time to make, so the price of Xilong lanterns is also quite high, ranging from tens to hundreds of yuan each.
🏮Xilong lanterns (lantern colors) are famous far and wide and have been selected for the 'Eighth Batch of Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Project Directory'.
⚠️Key point: Every year on the evening of the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, Xilong Village holds a bamboo strip lantern lifting ceremony. If you want to experience the lively taste of the New Year, come here and take a look.
The Dragon Waterfall has a drop of 131 meters, resembling a giant dragon descending from the sky, with a majestic momentum

Zhejiang Lingfeng Mountain
With its beautiful natural scenery and profound cultural heritage, Lingfeng Mountain is definitely a good choice.
Lingfeng Mountain is composed of nine peaks including Lingjiu Peak, Tianzhu Peak, and Shuangjian Peak, with the highest peak at an altitude of 1456 meters. The mountain is covered with dense forests, beautiful landscapes, and a pleasant climate, making it a summer retreat.
Jieyang Ancient City
Located within the Chaoshan metropolitan area, Jieyang city is often overlooked by people, but once you step into the ancient city of Jieyang, you'll encounter the impressive Jieyang Tower; the small yet exquisite Jinxian Gate; the simple and solid city walls; the magnificent and historically significant Confucian temple, City God Temple, Martial God Temple, Thunder God Temple, and Green Lion Temple, as well as the old street arcades. They have not lost their original flavor and still retain their original appearance. Staying in Jieyang for just one day is far from enough.
Puning's scenic spots are few and far between, and compared to Deqing, Nigou Village has a more distinctive charm!
Puning, a county-level city, has the largest population among all county-level divisions in the country and is under the jurisdiction of Jieyang City, Guangdong Province—the birthplace of Chaoshan culture.
Nigou Village in Puning is a name full of rustic charm, but it is an authentic urban village, located just three or four kilometers from the center of Puning city.
The characteristic of Nigou Village is the orderly Chaoshan-style residential houses, row upon row, house after house, as if measured with a ruler, so neat and tidy. It's a wonder how the villagers can follow such rules and not build haphazardly like in other villages.
The main body of Chaoshan-style residential houses is the common 'ear-shaped' roof structure seen in Fujian and Guangdong, but the 'ears' on the roofs here are quite unique; they are flat on top, unlike the curved tops seen in other regions.
The residential houses in Nigou Village are built with great care, with every household featuring carved beams and painted rafters. The dragon and phoenix motifs on the beams are colorful and vibrant, and the eaves often have intricate and elaborate etchings. Even the ventilation windows are adorned with colorful frames.
The use of bold and bright colors in the architecture of Nigou Village is daring, yet it doesn't feel tacky. In particular, the use of mung bean green as the main color palette somehow feels sophisticated.
Interestingly, the well-preserved ancient architectural style of the residential houses in Nigou Village is not actually ancient; they are only about thirty years old, and they are practical homes that are inhabited. Some villagers have also built four-story modern buildings nearby, but these look rather low in comparison to the traditional houses.
Thirty years ago, even the economy of the Chaoshan area was just starting to develop. It's a mystery how this village managed to build such costly courtyards with such unity.
The only modern village architecture that can compare with Nigou Village in terms of architectural details is the Bai ethnic courtyards in Dali, but even those are not as uniform.
Therefore, the architectural complex of Nigou Village in Puning is truly unique and definitely worth a visit!
Puning's high-tech agricultural park, a good place for parent-child travel
The southern country is full of spring, and it is the season of spring outing. Do you have a spring outing destination that you yearn for? On the eve of the Spring Festival, I embarked on a journey to Puning, Guangdong, and discovered a beautiful place surrounded by green mountains, where there is a bird's song and fragrance of flowers, and at the same time it exudes the breath of modern technology. This place is the Litai Fei'e Ling Agricultural Park in Puning, Guangdong.
Litai Fei'e Ling Agricultural Park stands on Fei'e Ling, Bigou Village, Dananshan Street, Puning City, Guangdong Province, adjacent to the Sankeng Reservoir. This scenic spot with agricultural leisure tourism as its main feature covers an area of 20 acres and 15 points, divided into leisure farm tourism sightseeing area, facility agriculture area and tourist distribution center. The park is evergreen and has a mild climate, which is very suitable for outdoor leisure and vacation.
As a leisure farm tourism sightseeing spot, Litai Fei'e Ling Agricultural Park is famous for its unique agricultural landscape and pastoral theme style, attracting many tourists to visit the park every day. The park has leisure farm tourism attractions such as Pastoral Song Parent-child Farm, Fantasy Maze Park, Modern Agriculture Education Base, Fei'e Lake Light and Shadow Art Theater; agricultural sightseeing gardens, science popularization corridors, ancestral halls and other facility agriculture sightseeing spots.
The Pastoral Song Parent-child Farm covers scenic spots such as Fei'e Wetland, Herb Island, RV Camp, Sunshine Vegetable Garden, Dinosaur Canyon, Volcanic Stone Walking Trail, Children's Park, Pastoral Stage, Four Seasons Fruit and Vegetable Greenhouse, Tomato Picking Garden, Vineyard, etc. The Modern Agriculture Education Base includes agricultural cultural squares, agricultural cultural wall scenes, fruit and vegetable corridors, overhead wooden walkways, net red rainbow bridges, science popularization research and study experience areas, twenty-four solar term squares, facility greenhouse agricultural comprehensive halls (divided into 3 shed areas: fruit and vegetable planting areas, agricultural landscape sketches and fish and vegetable symbiotic breeding areas, three-dimensional vegetable cultivation areas) and other landscape facilities. The Agricultural Sightseeing Garden is the core area of modern facility agriculture in the scenic area, and the gate is designed in the typical Chaoshan glazed tile flying eave architectural style. The park is built with the standards of "mechanization, technology, standardization, informatization, specialization" and has built four greenhouse areas. These greenhouses use soilless cultivation methods to grow cherry tomatoes, and use water-saving irrigation methods to grow small cucumbers, small pumpkins, melons, hamimelons and more than ten varieties of agricultural products.
In addition, the newly added Eastern Guangdong Aerospace Art Exhibition in the park opened on January 26, 2024, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in a wonderful journey of the sky, not only rich and interesting aerospace knowledge popularization, but also experience "on-site" rocket launches, VR and other projects. Here, we can take a spaceship and enter the sky in just 7 seconds, explore the secrets behind the moon, and fully feel the three-dimensional space environment and astronaut daily training. This high-tech, highly interactive experience is very suitable for parent-child families.
The scenic area integrates the beautiful natural landscape and beautiful mountains and rivers of the hinterland of Dananshan into ecological landscapes, leisure farm tourism, Chaoshan regional culture and health themes and other diversified elements, striving to build Litai Fei'e Ling Agricultural Park into a new type of agricultural complex that integrates modern agricultural greenhouses, leisure agricultural tourism, science popularization education research and study experience, parent-child interaction, and cultural heritage.

The opening ceremony was not only full of singing and dancing, but the organizers also invited the extremely famous Yingtan Yingge team from Puning to add to the festivities, dancing from the head of the street to the tail, as lively as the Chinese New Year. Interestingly, the youngest member of the Yingge team is only 5 years old, but his professionalism can already rival that of adults, and his vivid performance has also garnered a lot of praise.
📌 On Guochao Street, you can immerse yourself in the traditional culture of Puning, such as Yingge, Chao opera, wood carving, porcelain inlay, paper cutting, lacquerware, inside painting, and other intangible cultural heritage projects. The century-old architectural complex of De'anli is a marvel of Chaozhou architectural art
📍To delve into the architecture of Puning residential buildings, one must mention De'anli. It is the family settlement of the Fang Yao family, the admiral of the Guangdong naval forces during the Qing Dynasty, with a history of over 150 years.
🔗Throughout the annals of history, despite the vicissitudes of time, De'anli has preserved its architecture quite intact. With its large scale and complete range of architectural styles, it is considered a marvel of Chaozhou architectural art and is also a rare example of a mansion-style ancient village in China.
🏠The entire architectural complex covers an area of 63,000 square meters, with a built area of 32,000 square meters. Inside the fortress, there are official halls, ancestral halls, Buddhist halls, studies, storerooms, attics, etc., totaling 773 rooms, with architectural patterns such as 'Hundreds of Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix', 'Four-Horse Carriage', 'Four Gold Points', and 'Descending Tiger'. Due to its rare architectural layout and unique design style, it has been included in the civil architecture textbooks of the School of Architecture at South China University of Technology.
📷De'anli has now been transformed into a museum, art gallery, and antique city among other cultural industry entities. De'anli is a national AAA tourist attraction, a traditional Chinese village, one of the first batch of 27 ancient villages in Guangdong Province, the fifth batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units, a Guangdong Provincial Humanities and Social Sciences Popularization Demonstration Base, a Jieyang City Science and Education Base, and one of the eight scenic spots in Jieyang City.
