Punakha Dzong is one of the most important landmarks and tourist attractions of Thimphu. It is located in a serene surroundings. You have to cross the Punakha river on a swinging bridge to reach the fort. The whole place is very majestic and decorative. It is a large space and it takes almost an hour to do even a quick tour of the place. Lake’s water has a beautiful light green shade, you might think the pics are photoshopped but this is the real color. Punakha Dzong, this massive, jaw-dropping fortress right between two rivers. It’s like walking into a postcard. The whole district has a super chill vibe, with rice fields, swaying prayer flags, and cute little villages you’ll want to wander through forever. The suspension bridge nearby is also a fun stop, long, wobbly, and surrounded by mountain views. Everything just feels open and peaceful here, like time’s moving slower (in a good way). Whether you’re into hiking, temple hopping, or just sitting by the river with some tea, Punakha hits that sweet spot between culture and nature. When visitors passed by Punakha, most visit Chimi Lhakhang, Bhutan’s famed Fertility Temple, for its spiritual significance. To reach the temple, you hike through a gentle trail that cuts across lush rice paddies, quaint villages, and open farmland — and it’s this walk that made the visit so memorable for me. During my visit, I saw farmers burning parts of their paddy fields, clearing the land in preparation for the next planting cycle. The valley is quiet, expansive, and postcard-pretty, with traditional Bhutanese homes dotting the hillsides and locals working in the fields. The temple itself is small but spiritually significant, known for its unusual origin story and blessings for fertility. But even if that’s not what draws you there, the peaceful rural landscape makes this an essential stop in Punakha. Along the way, I couldn’t help but notice the numerous shops selling wooden phallus sculptures in every shape and size — painted, hanging, even mounted on rooftops! It’s something that might raise eyebrows elsewhere, but in Bhutan, these symbols are believed to ward off evil and bring fertility and good luck. Tucked away in the Punakha countryside, the hike up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten was one of the most rewarding parts of my Bhutan trip. I hiked all the way to the top, and though the trail had its ups and downs, the scenery along the way was absolutely stunning. As I climbed higher, I passed through lush forests, winding trails, and some of the most beautiful rice terraces I’ve ever seen — cascading down the hills like green waves. The view from the top was something else entirely: panoramic vistas of the Punakha Valley, dotted with farms, rivers, and mountain ridges that seem to stretch endlessly. The stupa itself is a beautiful example of Bhutanese craftsmanship, perched high above the valley like a quiet guardian. After visiting the majestic Punakha Dzong, we made our way to the nearby Punakha Suspension Bridge — one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, and definitely one of the most scenic! The bridge stretches dramatically over the Pho Chhu River, fluttering with layers of colorful prayer flags that dance in the wind. Walking across it was both calming and just a little bit thrilling — it sways gently with every step, especially when the breeze picks up! When you reached the end of the bridge, there are some eateries for you to buy some drinks and snacks. What I loved most was the view — lush hills, rushing river water below, and total quiet except for the wind and prayer flags. It’s not a difficult walk, but it’s such a memorable way to soak in the natural beauty of Punakha. A visit to Punakha Dzong, officially known as Pungthang Dechen Phodrang Dzong (meaning Palace of Great Bliss), was one of the most visually and culturally rich moments of my Bhutan trip. Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River), the setting is simply breathtaking — majestic, serene, and full of quiet power. The Dzong is not just a feast for the eyes with its intricate wooden carvings and vivid murals — it’s also a place of deep spiritual and historical significance. As with other official religious sites in Bhutan, entry is only allowed with a licensed local guide. One interesting cultural detail: before entering, civilian Bhutanese males (including my guide) must drape a white scarf (kabney) over their gho as a sign of respect. Bhutanese women wear a more colorful version of the scarf. As foreign visitors, we’re exempt from this, but it’s a powerful reminder of how seriously Bhutan takes tradition, respect, and symbolism. Punakha, Bhutan, was an unexpected spring highlight. As we crossed the Punakha Suspension Bridge—one of the longest in the country—colorful prayer flags fluttered beside blooming purple jacarandas and mustard fields. The majestic Punakha Dzong stood at the confluence of two rivers, its white walls framed by blossoms. We joined locals for a traditional meal of ema datshi (chili cheese) and wandered the serene temple gardens. Spring in Bhutan isn’t just beautiful—it’s spiritual, peaceful, and humbling in the best way. #springitinerary

| Mysterious Bhutan: What is there to do? Before going to Bhutan, my impression of this small South Asian country was very vague. I only knew that Tony Leung and Carina Lau held their wedding here, and I had seen photos of the Tiger's Nest Monastery online, but I couldn't name it... - Bhutan only has one international airport, and there are only a handful of cities with direct flights. The most convenient way is to fly from Bangkok, with round-trip tickets costing more than USD 900. You must have a guide when traveling in Bhutan, otherwise buying tickets and entering scenic spots will be a problem. In addition, there is a sustainable development fee of USD 100 per day... In short, it is very inconvenient and expensive. - What is there to do in such a mysterious country? I went there for four and a half days, and here are the four most impressive things in my mind: - 1️⃣ Visiting Dzongs "Dzong" is the county-level administrative unit of Bhutan, and the Dzong is the administrative center of each Dzong. Because Bhutan does not have any tall buildings, the Dzongs are the most eye-catching and majestic buildings in various places. Figures 1–8 show Punakha Dzong, the old capital of Bhutan. This Dzong is built at the confluence of two rivers, and there are even free-range chickens 🐓 inside. - 2️⃣ Experiencing Buddhist culture Buddhism is the state religion of Bhutan. When traveling in Bhutan, I asked the guide to help me identify which Buddhas were deities every day. Gradually, I remembered that the one with the bare chest was Drukpa Kunley, the one with the small mustache was Padmasambhava, and the one with the red hat and big beard was Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who unified Bhutan. The one holding the iron chain is Thangtong Gyalpo, the Iron Bridge Lama... Figure 9 is Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the "Divine Madman" Drukpa Kunley. He promoted the reproductive worship of Bhutan. Now there is still a 25 cm wooden 🍆 in the temple. Bhutanese people will walk around the temple three times carrying this 🍆 to pray for children. - 3️⃣ Experiencing Bhutanese cuisine Unlike its South Asian neighbors, the main ingredient in Bhutanese cuisine is not curry, but cheese. The national dish, Ema Datshi, is a stew made with chili peppers and cheese. I also like another dish, Sikam Paa, made with dried pork belly. - 4️⃣ Experiencing Tshechu Tshechu is the birthday of Padmasambhava, and it is held in different Dzongs every month. The largest ones are the Paro Tshechu in mid-April and the Thimphu Tshechu in early October. During the festival, there will be folk performances for several consecutive days. I will share them separately in the next post～ - You can also go hiking in the mountains, play archery, and enjoy hot stone baths in Bhutan... In fact, there are quite a lot of experiences to be had. Moreover, Bhutan's traditional culture is very well preserved. Men and women still wear traditional gho and kira. Here is full of romantic legends, where the grand wedding of the king was held. Here is beautiful and peaceful, with a big bodhi tree in the courtyard, ancient and towering, groups of little monks passing by, and the heart is as calm as a mirror in an instant. ❤️Recommendation reason: Rivers that gather melted water from the glaciers of the Himalayas flow past Punakha Dzong. This tall building is hidden in the lush forest. The Purna Kumbha architectural complex displays exquisite art and classical elegance, with spectacular views visible from both the outside and inside. According to legend, the builder of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple summoned the most renowned craftsmen of the time and ordered them to create a replica of heaven. While the craftsmen were pondering over the task, the builder took them to heaven to sketch the blueprint. Thus, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan became a depiction of heaven on earth, with no nails used in between any two pieces of wood. 🎈Best travel time: At the end of April, the purple wisteria flowers around the temple are in full bloom, surrounded by rivers, and paired with the white walls and red roofs of the ancestral castle, making it impeccable. Punakha Dzong, located in the old capital, is undoubtedly the most beautiful castle in Bhutan. Unfortunately, we are visiting in winter and have no chance to see the beautiful scenery of spring purple lilacs and the magnificent white walls of Zongbao, but Zongbao Inside and outside the clear river, dense vegetation, magnificent buildings... Especially the incomparably lush big Bodhi tree in the atrium, refreshed my awareness of the solemn Buddha. Punakka Fort is located at the intersection of the Mother River and the Father River in Bhutan. This rich and inclusive location also indicates that the Fort is a pivotal place in the history of Bhutan, which moved to Bhutan in the 1950s.
