Climbing the pyramids of Chichen Itza is prohibited, but you can climb Ek Balam. (Visited and climbed in February 2025) *Please check the latest information. You can also climb the ruins in the back right of the first photo, but the stairs are very steep and there are no handrails in some places, so you need to wear comfortable shoes and climb carefully. Not as famous as Chichen Itza but that is why you can enjoy exploring legitimate Mayan ruins without the crowds of people! Another big advantage is that you are allowed to climb up the ancient steps at this complex. They don't desicrate the architecture with safety rails so be careful. Climbing used to be allowed at Chichen Itza but now it isn't so perhaps it's better to do it at Ek Balam while you still can! Unfortunately, you must pay 60 pesos In addition to the entrance fee for using cameras other than a cellphone. I tried to use a GoPro secretly but there are security guards patrolling the premises and of course there's a high chance they will eventually catch you if you are filming on top of the structures. On a positive note, there are many iguanas here! To my surprise I was able to get pretty close to one before he scurried away. Sometimes dogs will bark at iguanas. There is also a strange looking type of tree here which has many thorns on the branches. In my humble opinion it looks bizarre. #Overseas travel Visiting the Ek Balam Archaeological Zone was an amazing and interesting experience. I Palam is an important archaeological site located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The site is famous for its ancient structures, statues and inscriptions belonging to the Mayan civilization. When I arrived at the site, I liked the way the monuments were preserved and organized. The site has comfortable tourist facilities including parking, shops, restaurants and restrooms, making the visit easy and comfortable. I also enjoyed seeing the statues and inscriptions carved into the structures. These colorful reliefs reflect the Mayan civilization's deep knowledge of astronomy, religious ceremonies and calendar.
