This temple was built during the reign of Emperor Yizong of the Tang Dynasty (approximately 860 to 874 AD). According to legend, a Japanese monk named Hui'e traveled across the seas to China in search of Buddhist teachings. During his pilgrimage to Mount Wutai, he encountered a revered statue of Guanyin and felt deep admiration. He decided to bring the statue back to Japan for worship. However, on his return journey, he repeatedly encountered obstacles in the form of iron lotus flowers blocking his way in the waters near Mount Putuo. Unable to take the statue away, Hui'e realized that Guanyin did not wish to leave. Thus, he built a shrine on Mount Putuo to enshrine the statue, marking the origin of the Guanyin sanctuary. Today, Puji Temple has become the largest ancient monastery on Mount Putuo and the central site of Guanyin worship in China, as well as a hub for Buddhist activities. We sensed that this architectural complex was not only a physical manifestation of an ancient monastery but also a long-lost echo of the soul. It felt like a spiritual symbol where Zen aesthetics and architectural beauty merged seamlessly. In this sacred mountain sanctuary, our body, mind, and spirit intertwined with the holy atmosphere. Our group of five walked slowly, starting from the Haiyin Pond where five-color lotus flowers bloom in summer, passing Yongshou Bridge, Duobao Pagoda, Stone Archway, Imperial Stele Hall to Tianwang Hall, and immersed in this ancient temple full of ancient charm and Zen tranquility. When we walked into the Dayuantong Hall, this important Buddhist place known as the "Living Hall", a long-lost spiritual clarity and emotion quietly surged in our hearts. We go to Zhujiajian by driving 300 kilometers from Shanghai, which takes about 5 hours. This time we chose to stay in a B&B in the exclusive Greentown area next to the Westin Hotel. The B&B has a large balcony and you can directly see the beach in the Nansha Scenic Area. You can watch the sunrise in the morning and fireworks in the evening. It only takes 10 minutes by car to Nansha Scenic Area, which is very convenient. The next day we drove to the pier and took a boat to Mount Putuo. Adgo Camp 📍阿德哥房车露营地Adgo Camp 🚗You can either go there by car, taxi or bus. The bus ride is 2 hours from a Ningbo and 4 hours from Hangzhou. I took a Didi from Ningbo. ⛺️This site is peaceful with nice views from the wide window Inside the 🚐caravan. Definitely won’t recommend if you want a real camp experience because it’s luxury glamping. My friends and I tried to turn this into a less luxurious glamping experience by bringing our own food and 🍗🍖bbq grill to prepare all meals by fire.
