Historic buildings

Zhang Hall is one of the few Ming Dynasty buildings left in Zhouzhuang Ancient Town. It was originally known as Yishun Hall. It was said to have been built by Xu Da’s younger brother Xu Xuan. In the early Qing Dynasty, it was transferred to the Zhang clan and and renamed as Yuyan Hall, but also commonly known as Zhang Hall. Zhang Hall was an official's residence with its own garden and was divided into the entrance hall, the carriage hall, the main Yuyan Hall, the lobby building, the chess room and the study room. There is also a side hall on the east side of the main hall. The side hall was very narrow and could only be passed by one person at a time. In ancien t times, when there were no honored guests, the main door would not be opened, and the family would use this side hall to go in and out of the building.
