Open the door to the "Little Forbidden City" of Shanghai, the Yangpu Library.
In fact, I visited the Yangpu Library in 2018 when it officially opened, and I even took a "same style" photo as the one that was popular online at the time. I put it in P2. But since I don't like reading, I rarely go to the library, so when I went again, I found that the Yangpu Library is no longer a place to take photos for its beauty, but a place to study and read.
☝ Past and present:
The predecessor of the Yangpu Library was the "Old Shanghai Library" (surprise!), which was built in the 1930s and designed by architect Dong Daxi, with Zhang Yutai Heji Construction Company responsible for the construction. However, during the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, the library was forced to cease operations and became a horse farm for the Japanese, with its facilities destroyed.
Fortunately, the library was reborn with its history. Its design is a mix of modern and traditional Chinese architecture, with a double-eaved hip roof covered with yellow glazed tiles, a three-arched gate, stone-like railings, red brick floors, and beautifully painted ceilings, resembling a Chinese "palace building."

The Little Forbidden City in Shanghai is actually a century-old library.
This is not Beijing, this is Shanghai! In Yangpu, Shanghai, there is such an amazing library 📚, which is known as the "Little Forbidden City" in Shanghai.
📚Walking into this library, I feel like I have traveled through time to the Forbidden City. The painted roof, the red cylinder bricks on the ground, and the traditional wooden windows all reveal a classical charm.
📕Especially the "Peacock Gate" in the central hall on the second floor, the two peacock shapes form a door 🏛️. The cast iron parts are connected with rivets, which are simply like artworks 🎨 that have traveled through time from ancient times.
This is the newly reopened Yangpu District Library 📚. It was planned to be built in August 1932 and was designed by the famous designer Mr. Dong Dayou at that time.
📚The Yangpu District Library, which has a history of more than 80 years, has a three-hole arch gate on the front of the gate building, surrounded by imitation stone pillars and railings, and the roof is a double-eave hip roof.
📚It has a sense of history and the facilities inside are very complete. All types of books are available, and each area is equipped with a large number of reading tables and chairs and socket panels.
🌳Choose a position by the window, where the green trees outside the window are shaded. Reading quietly on the antique table, you can sit for an afternoon.
It is not only suitable for quiet reading 📖, but also for taking photos 📷. It is also very suitable for children 🧒 who are in primary school or above to read and walk, and feel the historical culture!

Shanghai's most beautiful library—Yangpu Library
I was first attracted to Yangpu Library by the word 'Internet celebrity'; after visiting, I was amazed; and now, I return for the deep affection and the joy of reading!
The double-eaved hip-and-gable roof is unique, and the yellow glazed tile roof and the colorful dougong (bracket sets) under the eaves are full of the magnificent atmosphere of traditional architecture, especially eye-catching under the light.
The ceiling paintings inside the gatehouse are meticulously drawn with delicate strokes reminiscent of Thangka painting, revealing the charm of traditional Chinese architecture at every turn.
It's just too beautiful!

| Yangpu District Library.📕 Although it is not open at the moment, I went there before, but I still want to post it because it is antique and distinctive.
📕The predecessor was the "Old Shanghai City Library", designed by the famous designer Dong Dayou, and opened in 1936. This was the once "Greater Shanghai Plan". It was later abandoned...
📕80 years later, Yangpu District repaired and expanded the building, preserving the precious painted, glazed tiles and other highlights in the library with the technique of repairing the old as the old. The peacock door in the second floor hall is the original from 80 years ago, and the peacock door in the first floor hall is a replica of the second floor. It's really rare to see this style of architecture in Magic City, isn't it!
📕I just want to ask those students studying in the hall, do you feel like you are taking the palace exam in the Forbidden City

Not in Beijing, the 'Little Forbidden City' in Magic City, a century-old library, reopens
🧚♀️This is not Beijing, this is the 'Little Forbidden City' in Magic City, one of the most beautiful libraries in Shanghai! The Yangpu District Library, which has been closed for a summer, is finally reopening!
.
🏠Its predecessor is the old site of the Shanghai Municipal Library. The building was completed in 1936 and was one of the main buildings in the 'Greater Shanghai Plan' of the original Nationalist Government. It has a history of more than 80 years and connects the city's historical memory and future reality.
.
🧡The building faces west and east, the main part is two stories, some are three stories, and the design method uses a mix of modern architecture and traditional Chinese architecture, hence it has always been elegantly called the 'Little Forbidden City'!
.
💛Walking outside the library, you will be attracted by the three-hole archway on the front of the gatehouse. It is the visual center of the entire building. The roof is a double-eave Xieshan top, yellow glazed tiles, dougong, colored paintings, stone railings, etc., everywhere reveals the charm of traditional Chinese architecture. Under the mottled coat of the city wall, it also reveals the traces of time.
.
♨️Stepping inside, at the entrance of the first floor lobby, there is still the relic of the 'Old Shanghai Municipal Library' revolving door. The recess in the middle of the round floor tiles is the axis of the door, and the red cylinder brick floor around it also has a history of more than 80 years.
.
💚The 'Peacock Door' in the middle hall on the second floor, the door panels are two peacock shapes facing each other, above is a peacock with its tail feathers spread out, super exquisite, finely crafted, all cast iron parts are connected by rivets.
.
💙Inside the two-story space, red lacquered columns, green bottom Huacai, Chinese painting screens, green lampshade platforms, etc., when you look up at the colored painting on this Tang Dynasty roof, although only a part of it is original, other colored paintings are copied from the original, but they really look alike, every detail is permeated with the charm of traditional Chinese beauty.
.
🤎There are also treasure book rooms, living rooms, study rooms, reading rooms, borrowing areas, etc., the overall spatial layout is very clear, you can always find a suitable area for your own reading and study.
.
💯Ancient city gatehouse, yellow glazed tiles, gatehouse flying eaves big top, ground red cylinder bricks, roof colored painting... This Yangpu District Library with a history of more than 80 years! Remember to go and see this 'Little Forbidden City' on the weekend!

The main library of Yangpu District Library is located at 366 Changhai Road, Yangpu District, with an area of 14,152 square meters. It was renovated and expanded from the old Shanghai Library during the Republic of China period and is an excellent historical protection building in Shanghai. It has four major functional areas: document borrowing, digital services, exhibitions, and themed activities. At the same time, it has a special 'Shanghai Modern Municipal Theme Museum·Yangpu Museum', which reveals the inheritance and development of contemporary 'Knowledge Yangpu' and 'Smart District' to the 'Great Shanghai Plan', highlighting the heaviness of a hundred years of municipal history. Through the use of modern technologies such as RFID automated management and 3D navigation, it realizes a comprehensive space centered on 'learning', showing the cultural space reconstruction of the library in urban renewal.
