Travel the World | The Silk Road and the Charms of Gansu
Driving through the northwest is always accompanied by a sense of history. Jiayuguan, Yangguan, and Dunhuang in Gansu are treasures where Chinese culture and the Silk Road meet. Being there is like traveling through time, feeling the weight of history and the magnificence of nature.
1️⃣ Jiayuguan, known as the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven," is the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall. Standing on the towering city walls, looking out at the endless Gobi Desert, you can feel the hardships and pride of the ancients defending the frontier. Every brick on the city tower tells a story of history, filling you with awe for Chinese civilization.
2️⃣ Yangguan, though the site is in ruins, the poem "Drink another cup of wine, for west of Yangguan there will be no old friends" still seems to echo in your ears. The yellow sand and solitary smoke at sunset outline the desolation and poetry of the Silk Road, intoxicating you.
3️⃣ Dunhuang is undoubtedly the highlight of this trip. The murals and statues of the Mogao Caves are stunning in their artistic achievements and religious atmosphere. The Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Lake are natural wonders, with the desert and spring coexisting like a tranquil painting. Riding camels and listening to the wind in the sand here, you can experience the unique romance of the desert.
4️⃣ From the grandeur of Jiayuguan to the exquisite beauty of Dunhuang, every place in Gansu is worth savoring. It is not only a witness to history but also a journey of the soul through time and space.

The guardians of our Yangguan Road.
📍Attraction address: Gudongtan, 70 km southwest of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province
🚗Transportation: We drove there
👍️Must-visit attraction: Gudongtan, 70 km southwest of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province. It was established during the Western Han Dynasty and, together with Yumenguan, was the gateway to the Western Regions at that time. It was a must-pass barrier on the southern route of the Silk Road. It was named Yangguan because it was located south of Yumenguan.
The imitation Yangguan Pass was recreated based on the description in the "Shazhou Tujing" that the "ancient Yangguan Pass was 20 steps from east to west and 27 steps from north to south". The imitation Yangguan Pass is simple and atmospheric, simple and majestic, showing the Han family's style and reflecting the historical style. As a symbol of traditional Chinese culture, Yangguan has become a place to bid farewell to the homeland and family, and a place to express the feelings of parting when traveling. Yangguan Road is a synonym for the avenue of hope and the avenue of prosperity, expressing a beautiful vision.
The first picture is a statue of Zhang Qian, representing the border guards who have always protected our peaceful life, and their deeds are worth singing and crying.

Dunhuang West Line Tour | Watch a Desert Sunset.
Compared to the East Line, the Dunhuang West Line has more attractions, but you will return to the city around 10 PM. You can choose to rent a car based on your situation.
Route: Silk Road Heritage City - West Thousand Buddha Caves - Yangguan Pass - Yumenguan Pass - Yadan Geological Park
[Silk Road Heritage City]: I didn't visit this attraction. It consists of newly built structures, which are more suitable for those who like to take photos.
[West Thousand Buddha Caves]: Located in the western section of the Mogao Caves, the tickets are cheap, and you can get a guided tour of four caves. The West Thousand Buddha Caves were more likely funded by ancient commoners. The murals inside are not as impressive as those in the Mogao Caves, but they are still quite beautiful.
[Yangguan Pass]: Yangguan Pass is a privately built attraction. The scenic area includes immersive NPC interactions and requires a shuttle bus ride. In reality, only the ancient beacon tower and the newly built Yangguan Road remain.
[Yumenguan Pass]: Yumenguan Pass has three attractions. You will first visit Dafangpan City (an ancient granary site) and the Han Great Wall, and finally the Yumenguan Pass ruins.
[Yadan Geological Park]: For Yadan, you must join an off-road vehicle tour for a deeper experience. Regular tours only visit five viewing platforms with a ten-minute time limit at each, which is barely enough for photos and doesn't allow close-up views. Off-road vehicles can take you to many more spots, and the Yadan landforms are more spectacular. You can witness the entire sunset.
On the way back, the driver will show you the starry sky. However, it was too cold at night, so I took a few photos and returned to the car. Some people might find [Yangguan Pass] and [Yumenguan Pass] uninteresting, but I feel that as time passes, only these yellow earth remnants are left for us to see, which is quite poignant. Especially considering that there might have been prosperous small towns near these ruins, one can only lament the ruthlessness of time.

Yangguan- the ancient fortress
If you’re traveling on the Silk Road, this is a place you don’t want to miss . Yangguan is a bit far from Dunhuang. You need to rent a car to get there or ask your hotel/hostel for a one day tour to Dunhuang ancient city, Yangguan, Yumen, West Buddha cave, and the National Park. The cost is around 70 yuan per person. You’ll leave Dunhuang around 8am and come back around midnight.
At Yanguguan, you can get an entry/exit stamp in Chinese. Be prepared to have your name translated into Chinese. It costs 60yuan for a stamp that looks very legit. If you want to explore the ruins of Yangguan pay another 20yuan for an electric car or you can walk to the ruins. Yangguan is located in dessert, so bring sunscreen, umbrella, hat and plenty of water.

"Zhao Jun has a glass of wine, and there is no reason for the West."
This is the Yangguan customs.
I always heard about Yangguan Avenue, and today I figured out what was going on. During the Silk Road period, Yangguan and Yumenguan were the two major gates for the preservation of Dunhuang, and the only way to trade with them. However, Yumenguan is on the east and against the Xiongnu; the Yangguan is on the south, resisting some small countries and tribes that were not strong at the time. Therefore, the Yangguan is relatively safe, and the merchants are more willing to choose Yangguan. Over time, there is a saying about Yangguan Avenue.
Although there is only one () fire (city) station (head) left in Yangguan, it is still worth visiting. The
Yangguan Scenic Area is very well done. There are museums and experience areas in the scenic area. I made an antique building to restore the city at that time. There is also a free tour guide, the whole one and a half hours, the explanation is very detailed. The experience is very good!
Sarah Shan.
Yangguan is famous for its famous ancient poem "Zhaojun has more than a glass of wine, and the West has no reason for the people." It was originally a major town on the Silk Road. Today, the Yangguan Site, also known as the Yangguan Museum, is a scenic spot built on the basis of the Guyangguan Site. The ancients used the camel ringing here to measure the land with their feet. For us, there are more unknowns and beautiful sights ahead of us! The blue sky and white clouds make people suddenly open, compared with the vast desert, they are like the sand in the dust.
Min Photography.
West out of the Yangguan uninhibited person
experienced the shock of Dunhuang, westbound, the visual has been fatigued in the dim of the Gobi Desert, occasionally appearing a low pile of mounds, faintly can be identified as the ancient architectural remains. These inconspicuous mounds are the hustle and bustle of the Han Great Wall in the past, the Yangguan and Yumenguan in the Tang poetry, and they were the two most magnificent of them. The Chinese people are in love, and the gates and gates in the imagery of poetry often have the feeling of loyalty to each other. When we come to their feet in the cold winter, we feel even more desolate and tragic.
In order to enjoy the sunrise of the sun, I made a special early morning. As long as the sun does not rise in the northwestern wilderness, the cold wind that roars like a knife can easily engulf people. The thought of Wang Weidangs young demeanor: persuaded Jun to enter a glass of wine, and the West went out of Yangguan without a reason. For such a positive pass, his pen still does not reveal the horror of the color, it is really warm to the extreme.
, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Out of the Yangguan, it will soon face the Gobi desert where no friends are warm. Wang Weis verses were matched with tunes and became the most popular song Yang Guan San Die. Whether it is a levy to the side or a lone traveler, whether they are going to the Western Region, this sad tune will always be sung. At this time, the Yangguan is no longer the Yangguan, it symbolizes a distant, empty distance.
Shirley Zhu.
Sunshine
Zhaojun has more than a glass of wine, and there is no reason for the West to go out of Yangguan. Because of a place where poetry is familiar, the real sun has already been buried under the loess, leaving only some ruins of broken walls. .
Yangguan is the land of the ancient Chinese land transportation road, and it is the gateway to the South Road of Silk Road. The long history has left Guancheng with few remnants. The ancient Yangguan is connected to the Great Wall, which is 70 kilometers away from the north to the Yumen Pass. There are piers every few tens of miles, and there are more than a dozen gongs near the Yangguan. Especially on the top of the pier on the north side of the antique beach, the dragonfly called "Yangguan Eyes and Eyes" is the largest, the highest in the terrain, and the preservation is relatively complete.
The old Yangguan City has long since disappeared. There is only one ruins of the Han Dynasty, standing on the pier of the pier, relying on this pier and mountains, far and wide to see the bottom. The pier is at the commanding height of Yangguan. It is the only physical witness of Yangguan history. It is on the southern side of the mountain. There is a big beach that cannot be seen by the locals. It is called antique beach by the locals. Here, the sands are flowing, and the winding sand dunes are naturally arranged from east to west into more than 20 large sand beams. Between the sand beams, the gravel is flat. Han and Tang dynasty pottery, iron bricks, tiles, weapons, ornaments, pottery and other ancient relics, all over the place. Therefore, the locals said that they "goed into the antique beach and did not return the empty hand".

Advise the monarch to make a cup of wine, and the West is out of the sun. This poem was written by Yang Wei, the great poet when he sent his friends. Yang Guan, as the gateway to the Silk Road South Road, was built in the four counties of Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty. It is located 70 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang. Hey, according to Sichuans danger, it echoes Yumenguans north and south. It takes an hour to drive from Mingsha Mountain, write a customs clearance disc, cross the Yangguan, look up, desert Gobi, lonely beacon tower, a vast expanse.
Walking_Wild_Goose.
From Haixi to Dunhuang, the journey is only a few hundred kilometers, but the temperature rises sharply here. When you come to Yangguan, you can feel the enthusiasm of fire when you open the door. The Yangguan Site, also known as the Yangguan Museum, is located on the west side of Dunhuang City. It is a scenic spot built on the basis of the Guyangguan Site. The ticket for the scenic spot is 60 yuan. In the scenic area, some tower buildings resembling the Han Dynasty were built, and a number of exhibition halls were set up to showcase the many cultural relics on the ancient Silk Road. "Zhao Jun has a glass of wine, and the West is out of the Yangguan." Once the Yangguan, here is the throat of the ancient Silk Road, and the last level of exile in the northwest. The film is echoing on the Gobi.
