Where to go plum blossom viewing in 2025? Come to Hangzhou's thousand-year-old famous lake.
As the temperature rises, Hangzhou welcomes the plum blossom viewing season. Lingfeng is bustling with people seeking plum blossoms, Chaoshan is busy with cars for plum viewing, Xixi is filled with boats hurrying for plum viewing, and Gushan sees people leisurely enjoying the cultured plum blossoms. A tour around these places not only allows you to appreciate the "snow-like" plum blossom feast but also the unique Jiangnan charm of Hangzhou, making it a delightful experience!
However, perhaps due to their fame, these traditional plum blossom viewing spots are truly crowded! Are there any less crowded places with convenient transportation that are good for plum blossom viewing? After some thought, I recommend a thousand-year-old famous lake in Hangzhou with a Plum Blossom Island, directly accessible by subway. Those interested can check it out!
The place I'm recommending is Yangpi Lake in Fuyang, Hangzhou, a low-key lake with a thousand years of history!
Historically, Yangpi Lake was built during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty and has maintained its wetland ecological characteristics since then. In 2019, the Fuyang District Committee and District Government launched the Yangpi Lake Ecological Restoration and Management Project and designed an ecological space of "One Lake and Seven Gardens." The one lake is the ancient Yangpi Lake, and the seven gardens are Jianjia Garden, Yilinghua, Huaman Garden, Hefeng Garden, Yuqu Garden, Qinglian Garden, and Daoxiang Garden, connected by 39 bridges!
With the arrival of the plum blossom viewing season in the spring of 2025, there is a "Plum Blossom Island" in the center of Yangpi Lake. Currently, hundreds of plum trees on the island are in full bloom, with half the island ablaze with red plum blossoms and the other half elegant with white Green Calyx plums.
For first-time visitors, you can navigate to 'Shimiwan Station.' After crossing a suspension bridge, a large expanse of snow-white Green Calyx plums will come into view. The plum trees are planted somewhat randomly, scattered on both sides of the island's circular path, their branches intertwining and growing freely, forming a white floral curtain.
There are two ways to enjoy the view: by land, walking along the circular path through the plum groves, or by water, taking a painted boat across the lake.
Up close, the petals of the Green Calyx plum are as thin as cicada wings, crystal clear, and the stamens are a tender green. A few petals fall with the wind, landing quietly on the moss along the path, adding a touch of color to the antique Plum Blossom Island. Standing on the boardwalk and looking into the distance, the red plums resemble patches of crimson clouds against the gray sky, contrasting beautifully with the "white snow." As the breeze blows, petals flutter and fall, landing on the ground and bobbing with the waves, like a group of dancing butterflies.
Interestingly, due to the favorable environment, Yangpi Lake also attracts many birds. In addition to the "native" black swans, various other bird species linger and fly here, even swimming to the shore to be photographed and fed by tourists. This can be considered a "bonus" of plum blossom viewing at Yangpi Lake.
Unlike other plum blossom viewing spots, Yangpi Lake is open free of charge all day. Plum Blossom Island is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm daily and can be reached on foot or by sightseeing bus (boat). The boat costs 40 yuan/person, and the sightseeing bus costs 30 yuan/person.
Transportation:
By car, navigate to "Yangpi Lake." After parking, navigate to 'Shimiwan Station' to reach Plum Blossom Island. You can also choose to take a boat directly.
By public transport, take Subway Line 6 to "Yangpi Lake Station" Exit C. Walk about 2 kilometers to the east entrance of the scenic area, then navigate to 'Shimiwan Station' to reach Plum Blossom Island.
Besides "plum blossom viewing" at Yangpi Lake's Plum Blossom Island, the seven gardens of Yangpi Lake also have unique characteristics:
1. Jianjia Garden: Planted with metasequoia forests, reeds, irises, and various other aquatic plants, it features diverse boardwalks and a plum blossom-themed island near the water, creating a tranquil environment.
2. Yilinghua: Includes open lawn areas, agricultural amusement parks, colorful flower seas, forest slides, forest expansion activity areas, and water play areas.
3. Huaman Garden: Planted with aquatic irises, wild rice stems, reeds, loosestrife, aquatic cannas, yellow irises, sea thrift, bulrushes, and other rich aquatic plants, creating a natural landscape of dotted red and flowing crimson, a sea of flowers on the water.
4. Hefeng Garden: Features various walking paths, waterfront platforms, and water boardwalks, offering different lotus viewing experiences and creating a landscape of wild lotus fragrance.
5. Yuqu Garden: Raises silver carp, bighead carp, culter, mandarin fish, prawns, and river snails, adding to the fun of fishing.
6. Qinglian Garden: Features pin oaks, cherry blossoms, Chinese tallow trees, chicken claw maples, river willows, and other plants, creating a quiet, elegant water environment with fallen cherry blossoms and green lawns, a romantic and leisurely urban open area.
7. Daoxiang Garden: Features elevated boardwalks and pavilion spaces, enhancing the fun of experiencing the farmland landscape and creating a characteristic landscape of rice fragrance and egret shadows, with a rustic charm.
If you have time, you can also explore these areas!
