Don't miss Yanfu Temple in Wuyi this season!
Don't miss Yanfu Temple in Wuyi this season!
Yanfu Temple is like an old man standing silently, carrying a heavy history and culture, quietly telling stories of the past. Its unique architectural style combines the characteristics of multiple eras, with flying eaves, bucket arches, carved beams, and painted buildings, all showing a simple and elegant charm. As soon as you step into the temple, you can feel the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere, as if time has slowed down.
There are many local specialties in Wuyi. The first recommendation is Xuanping wonton, with a thin skin like cicada wings wrapped in tender meat filling, which melts in your mouth, and the delicious soup is unforgettable. There is also Wuyi bamboo rice, which is made by steaming glutinous rice, bacon, green beans, and other ingredients in a bamboo tube. The rice has a unique bamboo fragrance, and it tastes different.
As for the attractions around Yanfu Temple, besides the temple itself, the nearby mountain and water scenery is also very charming. The temple is surrounded by green mountains, with lush vegetation on the mountains, and different scenery in each season. In spring, the mountains are full of flowers, in summer, the trees are green, in autumn, the red leaves are like fire, and in winter, the mountains are covered with snow. Walking along the mountain path, you can breathe fresh air and feel the charm of nature.
If you want to go to Yanfu Temple, pay attention to transportation. If you start from Jinhua city, it takes about 1 hour by car. If you go from Wuyi Station, it takes about 45 minutes by taxi. It is more recommended to drive by yourself, because it is relatively inconvenient to take a car.
There is a camellia tree in the temple, and the flowers are in full bloom this season. The flowers are bright and dripping, contrasting with the ancient buildings of the temple. The picture is simply beautiful, and you can get a lot of likes in your circle of friends by taking pictures here.
Admission is free. When visiting Yanfu Temple, pay attention to the temple's regulations, do not make loud noises, and keep the temple quiet and clean. Dress appropriately, not too revealing, to show respect for religious places.

Yanfusi Temple in Wuyi County.
There is a Changsheng Pool between the halls and a Shijian Well behind the hall. There are stone lion arches in front of the mountain gate and Guanyin Hall. The main hall was rebuilt in the 4th year of the Yuan Dynasty (1317) and is the oldest treasure among the Yuan Dynasty buildings discovered in Jiangnan. The hall is square, divided into five rooms, with a double-eave hip roof. In 1934, modern architects Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin made a special trip from Hangzhou to Wuyi County, Jinhua, to investigate the ancient temple and found that it was the earliest existing wooden structure ancient temple in Jiangnan, which was written into the History of Chinese Architecture. There is a new temple in front and an ancient temple behind. There is a creation base of the Zhejiang Writers Association nearby. The surrounding area is lush with vegetation and the environment is elegant.

✨Are you looking for a peaceful and charming place? In 2024, I found my favorite small town - Wuyi.

Tranquil and serene—Yanfu Temple in Wuyi
I stayed at Yanfu Yuan in Wuyi on the night of May Day. The hotel is right next to Yanfu Temple, and I visited the temple early the next morning. The temple is a wooden structure from the Yuan Dynasty, very simple and with a touch of Tang Dynasty style. Mr. Liang Sicheng and Mr. Lin Huiyin discovered this place and came here several times to study its architectural techniques. Now, a new temple has been built beside the old one for worship, while the old temple is only open for visits.

The foremost ancient structure in the south of the Yangtze River
Yanfu Temple, located in Taixi Town, Wuyi County, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province, was originally built in the second year of the Tiancheng era of the Tang Dynasty (927 AD) and rebuilt in the fourth year of the Yanyou era of the Yuan Dynasty (1317 AD). It is one of the only three remaining Yuan Dynasty buildings in the south of the Yangtze River. Yanfu Temple covers an area of more than 4,500 square meters, with a building area of 1,000 square meters. The existing architectural complex is arranged along the central axis, consisting of a three-bay mountain gate as the first entrance, a three-bay Hall of Heavenly Kings as the second entrance with a single-wall hip-and-gable structure. The third entrance is the five-bay Mahavira Hall with a double-eave hipped-gable roof, in front of which there is a longevity pool. The fourth entrance is the seven-bay Guanyin Hall, with the central three bays as the main body, flanked by two-story wings on each side, and east and west wing rooms. There is a stone well on each side in front of the hall. The main hall of Yanfu Temple has completely preserved the style and structural features of the Yuan Dynasty's wooden bracket architectural art, providing a good example for studying the transitional development of architecture from the Song to the Ming Dynasty.

The oldest Yuan Dynasty building in Jiangnan
🏯There are three ancient Yuan Dynasty buildings in Zhejiang Province, with Yanfu Temple being the oldest. It was selected as a key cultural relics protection unit twice in 1960 and 1981.
🏔️The main hall of Yanfu Temple was rebuilt in the fourth year of Yuan Yanyou, originally built as a single-eave Xieshan top, and a lower layer of double eaves was added in the Ming Dynasty, forming a double-eave Xieshan top construction style, and the opening was changed from three to five.
⛩️Entering Yanfu Temple in order are the mountain gate, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Pool of Longevity, the main hall, the side hall, and the rear hall. The stone lions guard the mountain gate, and the plaque was inscribed by Mr. Zhao Puchu, the former chairman of the Buddhist Association and a famous calligrapher.

Crossing a thousand years, encountering the most beautiful snow scene of Yanfu Temple!
The southern Zhejiang finally experienced a rare heavy snowfall in decades, and the little potatoes in the south celebrated all over the sky, and their excitement could not be calmed down. The old aunt couldn't help but immediately took a leave and embarked on a spontaneous snow-walking trip to Yanfu Temple!
On the way to Yanfu Temple, the car drove all the way, as if entering a fairy tale world. The snow-covered mountains and rivers were like beautiful paintings constantly imprinted in my eyes, which was overwhelming and only made people marvel at the magic of nature!
🏚Yanfu Temple was built in the second year of Tang Tiancheng. It is the oldest wooden ancient building in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai area. In 1934, Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin came here for research and left precious images. I saw in these images that the Buddha statues inside are unique and retain the appearance of that year. I searched the entire temple for these Buddha statues... I couldn’t find them for a long time, and suddenly realized that the Buddha statues had been destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, which is really regrettable. Fortunately, the temple ruins are still there and have been restored as before. I hope that future generations will cherish it!
The surrounding area of Yanfu Temple is the location of Wuyi Hot Springs. After completing the millennium journey, the little friends can soak in the hot springs in the snow, which is worthwhile!

Visiting Yanfu Temple and Baovillage at the foot of the mountain, the experience is really strong! Everyone must come once!
Liang Sicheng realized the true meaning of 'Yingzao Fashi' in the thousand-year-old Yanfu Temple, and a widely circulated photo of Lin Huiyin was also taken here. Yanfu Temple is one of the most representative Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty buildings in the Jiangnan area. Although it has been repaired, it still retains the original main structure and form. Walking among them, there is only shock and reverence in my heart.
The village houses in Baovillage at the foot of the mountain were once selected by Liang Sicheng as the representative of the architecture in the Zhejiang and Jiangxi mountain areas and written into 'The History of Chinese Architecture'. The village is built according to the mountain, with a well-arranged layout. Many farmhouses were built in the Qing Dynasty and are genuine antiques. Walking slowly in the village, smelling the intoxicating fragrance of osmanthus, watching the simple villagers busy, sunning soybeans, beating soybeans, sieving soybeans, making tofu... I can't help but blend in, forgetting all worldly troubles.
What touches me more is the enthusiasm of the restaurant owner and other diners when eating lunch at the local restaurant next to the Taohu Creek Town Government, the affordability of three dishes for three people to eat for only 65, and the villagers in Baovillage at the foot of the mountain who gave us soy milk to drink and explained how to beat soybeans and make tofu. A whole day of leisure and comfort. It's not far to come, but I've gained a lot of solidity and happiness.
ps: Self-driving is very convenient, take the Shangsong line, the road is good, the ascent is slow, not steep, no sharp turns, the scenery along the way is absolutely beautiful.
