Review of Wat Ko Kaew Sutharam
Late Ayutthaya Period Murals
Completeness and Value: The murals inside the ordination hall are considered Phetchaburi's most precious treasures. Despite being hundreds of years old, they remain intact and clearly demonstrate the late Ayutthaya art style.
Painting Contents:
The wall behind the principal Buddha image: depicts the Buddha's life story, the temptation of Mara.
The wall in front of the principal Buddha image: depicts the ancient universe (Traibhumi).
The side walls (representing windows): depict the Atthamahasthan (eight important sites in the life of the Buddha) and Sattamahasthan (seven places of residence after enlightenment), as well as depictions of the Vidyadhara and Gandharvas from various nations.
Technique: The paintings are made of tempera paint, using a limited number of colors, such as red, black, white, and yellow, and a white base. This demonstrates the independent craftsmanship of local craftsmen, who were not overly attached to royal craftsmanship.
Maha-ud Style Ubosot:
The ordination hall has the Maha-ud style, meaning there are no windows, with only an entrance and exit at the front. (and there is a small door at the back, following the principles of the Maha-Udom Ubosot), an architectural feature found in ancient temples.
Stylish Stupa:
In front of the Ubosot and Vihara is a large, stucco-clad stupa decorated with beautiful stucco patterns.

Wat Ko Kaew Sutharam
Wat Ko Kaew Sutharam, or as locals often call it, “Wat Ko”, is a temple of historical and artistic significance in Phetchaburi Province. It has been around since the Ayutthaya period. The temple’s unique feature is its ordination hall, which was built in the Ayutthaya style. It has two doors on each side, but no windows, as was popular at that time. This gives the interior a solemn and peaceful atmosphere, perfect for meditation and religious ceremonies.
Another highlight of the ordination hall is its 200-year-old murals, which are painted using a powder color and glue technique. These paintings reflect the craftsmanship of master craftsmen in the past. These paintings cover all four walls, telling stories of Buddhism and reflecting the way of life of the people of that era.
In addition to its beautiful architecture and art, Wat Ko Kaew Sutharam is also a place of spiritual significance for the people of Phetchaburi. If you have the chance to visit Phetchaburi, this temple is a must-see destination to experience the history and culture of ancient Thailand. #ThaiHistory #Phetchaburi

Wat Ko Kaew Suttaram
Wat Ko Kaew Suttaram, the name of which comes from the fact that it used to be a temple located on an island, although it no longer has the island-like appearance.
This temple is often visited by archaeologists, artists, and architects.
Because this temple is a center of the craftsmanship of Phetchaburi craftsmen who are the best in their craft.
Starting with the Ubosot that arches like a ship's hull and is a Maha-ut chapel, meaning it has 4 doors and no windows to create a sacred atmosphere during the ceremony. The added benefit is that there is plenty of space for painting murals.
The principal Buddha image is in the Samadhi posture, surrounded by murals on all 4 sides, all of which are masterpieces that are extremely difficult to find.
Because this temple has had many people abandon their dogs, before visiting, you should contact the temple first.

There is a chapel built in the style popular in the Ayutthaya period. There are 2 doors on each side. There are no windows. Inside, there are more than 200-year-old murals painted with powdered paint mixed with glue on all 4 walls. Overall, these are rare and unusual images. The principal Buddha image in the chapel is a stucco Buddha in the Mara-Vijaya posture.
