I have been to Manila for several times and I usually stay in areas that I have never been. For my recent trip, I chose the area around UST or University of Santo Tomas in Sampaloc, which is 2-3km or 10 minutes of jeepney ride (bound for Quezon City) from Intramuros. I booked a hostel in that area in trip.com to avoid the notorious traffic of Manila. I started the day early with UST itself so as to not disturb the students and university staff much. I visited UST Museum (several interesting paintings and artifacts) and the university compound (calm inside but very busy outside) and observed the university life that I was away for a long time! Then I had a breakfast at the area on the southwest side of UST, where there were many dormitories and had good student vibes at night. A short walk away, I explored the bustling Quiapo Market and visited Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Jesus kneeling and carrying cross). I finished on the other side of Quezon Blvd. San Sebastian Church seems to be the main site of this side. It is unique in that it is all steel (Belgium made) and more resistant to earthquake. I passed by at least 5 small- to mid-sized universities and colleges, a good concentration. I missed one site the Presidential Museum and Library, which needs an appointment in advance. If you are bored with the typical touristic areas in Manila, you can try the UST area. #ust #manila

Ancient Beautiful University

There's nothing like walking around the school I should have been to, but not. Though much has changed, it is still marked in my youth and will forever be part of my life. Officially the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, Manila. Founded on April 28, 1611, by Spanish friar Miguel de Benavides, third Archbishop of Manila, it has the oldest extant university charter in Asia and is one of the world's largest Catholic universities in terms of enrollment found on one campus. It is the main campus of the University of Santo Tomas System that is run by the Order of Preachers. #GOUSTé
