The best seasons for hiking are spring and summer. During winter, most people take photos near the foot of the snowy mountains. On the day I visited, it was raining, so there were more clouds. I recommend visiting on a clear day for better photos. The government has announced that starting in 2027, there will be an entrance fee for this attraction.

The hike is around 19 kilometers and yeah, it's long, but so worth it. You’re walking between active volcanoes, past craters and crazy-colored lakes that look like something from another planet. The Emerald Lakes were definitely the highlight for me. Weather changes fast up there, so layering is key. It was sunny at the start and then freezing and windy near the summit. Bring snacks, lots of water, and good shoes because some of the track is steep and slippery, especially around the Red Crater. There’s also heaps of shorter walks around the park if you're not up for the full-day hike. We stayed in National Park Village which was super chill and close to everything. If you’re into landscapes that feel epic and a bit unreal, Tongariro is totally the place. Just be ready for a workout.

#NewZealandTongariro#Volcano 2025.01.11 Tongariro alpine crossing Known as one of the top ten scenic one-day walks in the world, the Tongariro Track is approximately 20 kilometers long and is one of the most anticipated attractions in the North Island. (But I can’t find out what the other nine are?) Before setting off, we applied for a mountain pass online. The DOC in charge also sent us a long letter to remind us of the precautions, warning us that this mountain is not easy to climb, the temperature changes quickly, and we must prepare enough cold-proof clothing and food. It was cloudy in the morning on the day of departure. We saw a beautiful sunrise on the way. It was very windy on the red crater and the road was very long. Having received training in Taiwan's 100 Peaks, we felt it was easy to walk on and the climbing was not difficult. The only thing to note is that the downhill gravel section after the red crater is very slippery, much slippery than the gravel slope in Nanhu. It is actually not bad to be careful and go down slowly. I fell there twice, but I also saw people slipping, getting injured and bleeding, and even spraining their feet. The cool thing about this trail is that the scenery changes throughout the whole journey. At the beginning, you walk on the barren land where you can see the volcano, then you come to the volcanic basin. When you see the red crater and the beautiful alpine lake, you think it is really worth walking. When you go downhill, you can also see Lake Taupo in the distance. It’s just that the zigzag downhill feels like you can never finish walking. At the end, you walk into the forest and stream. It takes about eight hours to walk slowly and take pictures. I suggest staying in the national park because you enter from A and exit from B. You can choose to drive to parking lot B and take the shuttle bus back to A, but I suggest taking the shuttle bus directly from the national park. The round trip is 60 New Zealand dollars, which is the same as the previous shuttle bus, and you don’t have to fight for a parking space early in the morning. When you go down the mountain, you can eat at a restaurant called Schnapps bar that is delicious and has large portions. I still miss the pork ribs. 19.4km day hike across an active volcanic landscape - that’s the Tongariro alpine crossing in the middle of north island, New Zealand. Considered one of the top 10 1-day hike in the world, I had to give my shot in conquering it as an amateur hiker. It wasn’t easy - rough terrains and slippery ice on certain steep parts, slippery terrain after red crater, the Devil’s staircase, long distance 20km, almost sub-zero temperatures at the red crater during my hike in end April 2024. This trail is not for the weak - you have to be well prepared! Bring food, water, layers, gloves, adequate hiking equipment. This trail is 19.4km long and has many elevation changes, making it famous as "the most beautiful hiking trail in New Zealand" and a popular trail visited by many people every year. I was really looking forward to seeing the dynamic scenery, such as the volcanic terrain and emerald-colored lakes that are rarely seen. However, the weather was unfortunate on the day. Light rain and fog had been rolling in since the morning, visibility was poor, and the surrounding scenery was almost hazy. In particular, when I reached a place overlooking the emerald lake, I was expecting a vivid green color, but I could only see it vaguely because it was shrouded in fog, which was a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, the rugged volcanic scenery and geothermal atmosphere unique to this trail are unique, making you feel like you are walking on another planet. The course itself has many ups and downs, so it was physically demanding, and the sense of accomplishment was even greater. I would recommend this experience of walking while facing the magnificent nature of New Zealand to anyone who loves the outdoors.

#fallishere Amazing views of the spectacular blue lake and we stopped alot of times along the way to take lots of pictures and took a good few breaks to eat food. The start is pretty easy and you can walk fast. On your way you see beautiful and picturesque landscapes. The craters, lakes and mountains were absolutely stunning. We took about 6-7 hrs with stops from start to finish so take enough water,snacks and sun protection with you. A really beautiful walk to see the bright blue crater lakes and volcanoes.

New Zealand is one of the best places for hiking because of the amazing views the place has to offer. And the Tongariro Crossing as shown in this photo, is a must do hike, if you’re up to some fun and exciting hike in the North Island! The trail offers beautiful sceneries no matter which spot you are at, made up by the natural landscape and the clean environment. And we should never take the clean part for granted! Its a place which is really crowded with tourists, and it takes everyone to play a part in making sure they do not leave any carbon footprint behind, like throwing their food wrappers, bottled water etc. Like for us, we packed our food in food containers, bought a trash bag along with us to keep all the waste.
