Visit Tianmu Historic Trail
#MarchGoodPlaces2025
The Tianmu Water Pipeline was a water transport route opened during the Japanese colonial period. In order to draw spring water from Yangming Mountain, water pipes were laid here to supply the Tianmu area, and footpaths were set up along the way, which are commonly known as the "Water Pipeline". Along the trail, you can see the Sanjiaopu Power Plant, large black water pipes and adjustment wells left by the Japanese (Figures 14-15). Along the way, there are dense trees, beautiful scenery, primitive forests and rich ecology. Walking along the trail makes people feel cool and comfortable.
When people mention the "Tianmu Historic Trail", they usually mean the Tianmu "Water Pipeline Trail", a popular trail on the southern edge of Yangmingshan National Park, which runs from Huagang (Cultural University) to Tianmu (Alley 232, Section 7, Zhongshan North Road) and is about 2.6 kilometers long. This section is relatively easy to walk, all downhill.
It is more difficult to start from Tianmu. You must first climb 1,300 steps. After reaching the adjustment well, there is a flat forest bathing trail (Figure 17-18). In addition to breathing fresh air, you can also hear the gurgling water in the large black water pipes and the chirping of birds and insects. Here you can wander in the lush water source protection forest, experience the tranquility and primitiveness of nature, and learn about the various cultural and historical features of the Tianmu Ancient Trail. I walked this section, and the end point was Culture University, because it was more physically active. The scenery along the way was beautiful, with all kinds of plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits everywhere. I happened to see a cat standing on a water pipe, which was super cute.
