Natural scenery
Howes Lake is a scenic man-made lake owned by the National Trust for Historic Places. From Hawkshead, follow the B5285 for 2 miles and a winding country road leads to the lake. There are regular trails built along the lake, which is very pleasant to walk and enjoy the scenery, and you can often see rare red squirrels playing in the tree tops. There is a small trust car park on the shore of Lake House, but it can easily be fully loaded, and there is a charge for non-trust members to park.
