Tucked away in the mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture, this place is like stepping into a storybook with dramatic cliffs, emerald green water, and a waterfall that feels like it’s whispering ancient legends. Here’s how my day went, and why I’d go back in a heartbeat: ⸻ 🚗 Getting There I joined a one-day tour from Hakata Station, which made everything super convenient and on schedule. ⸻ 🛶 The Boat Ride – The Highlight of the Trip Renting a rowboat was the best decision I made. Floating between those towering basalt cliffs, with the Manai Waterfall pouring right next to you… it’s peaceful, surreal, and honestly, quite romantic. I went there as a couple and we got many photos! Trust me, this place is very instagramable! Cost: Around ¥3,000 for 30 minutes Warning: Get there early! The queue can get long, especially during holidays. It’s better to reserve 2 weeks before you go there. Takachiho Gorge is located in north Miyazaki, Kyushu, and is about 3h bus ride away from Fukuoka city. It is a volcanic formation as a result of the nearby Mount Aso. With Gokase River cutting through the basaltic rocks, the result is a narrow chasm with basaltic columns on both sides, which resemble scales at many places. The main attraction at the gorge has to be the 17m Manai Falls. To get a close up view of the falls, one can hire a boat, but it is recommended that you make a pre-booking for this. Otherwise there’s an observation deck which provides a great view as well. Near the falls, there’s a restaurant that serves nagashi somen - flowing noodles. The noodles are served via flowing water on bamboo shoots, and you have to catch the noodles with chopsticks as they flow past.
