The Taiping Ladder, spanning Taiping Mountain and Guishan Mountain, is Taiwan's longest single-span pedestrian suspension bridge. Locals call Turtle Back Mountain "Guishan," 36 Bays "Snake Mountain," and Five Peaks "Dragon Mountain." Surrounded by mountains, Taiping is like a lotus nest. The Taiping Highway, as we see it today, was paved by hand by nearly 40,000 men during the Japanese colonial period. It was the first road built in the Chiayi mountainous area and was widened in 1986. Along the route, betel nut and longan trees flourish, offering breathtaking views of the Yunlin-Chiayi Plain on clear days. The suspension bridge, 281 meters long and located approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, offers visitors an excellent vantage point for panoramic views of Chiayi's scenery and sunsets. Stepping onto the Taiping Cloud Ladder, you can feel the mountain breeze and enjoy an unobstructed view. Whether under a clear sky or shrouded in mist, the bridge offers a unique and captivating view. On clear days, one can gaze out over the vast expanse of the Jianan Plain, with its villages and rice paddies visible. When the sky is thick with mist, the bridge appears to float above the clouds, creating a sense of wonderland. The Taiping Cloud Ladder is also designed with user-friendly features, featuring a wooden deck that is both safe and convenient. The hollow iron frame in the center of the bridge allows visitors to peer down at the verdant fields below, adding to the sense of adventure. The emerald green of the surrounding tea mountains contrasts with the azure sky, creating a visual feast for visitors.
