Schwerin Castle
Schwerin Castle is a jewel of northern Germany, its beauty seemingly floating on the lake. The view from the bridge before entering the castle was already breathtaking, and the castle's reflection in the water was truly impressive. The interior boasts a magnificent palace atmosphere, with particularly memorable golden decorations, meeting rooms, and the chapel. The gardens are also well-maintained, making for a pleasant stroll. A boat ride on the surrounding Lake Schwerin is also recommended for a view of the castle. If you're planning a trip to northern Germany, this is a must-add to your #travelplan.

A Fairytale for One: My Solo Day at Schwerin Castle
#mytraveldiary
I just spent a day living in my own storybook. My solo trip to Schwerin Castle was a magical escape into a world of turrets, treasures, and tranquil lake views. It’s the perfect destination for any independent traveler seeking beauty, history, and a touch of enchantment.
What is this place all about? Schwerin Castle is a breathtaking palace located on its own island in Lake Schwerin. Often called the "Neuschwanstein of the North," it’s a masterpiece of romantic historicism, with ornate rooms, lush gardens, and shimmering reflections in the water. It’s now the seat of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s state parliament but feels like it’s straight out of a Grimm brothers' tale.
Why Here? For a safe, compact, and visually stunning solo experience. The castle and gardens are perfect for exploring at your own pace, whether you’re an architecture lover, history buff, or just someone who wants to feel like royalty for a day. The town of Schwerin is also quiet and welcoming.
My Solo Itinerary:
· Morning: Took a train from Hamburg or Berlin to Schwerin. Walked from the station through the charming old town to the castle—the approach across the bridge is unforgettable.
· Afternoon: Explored the castle’s opulent state rooms and the fascinating castle museum. Got lost in the baroque gardens, finding quiet benches with perfect views of the palace. Took a relaxing boat tour on Lake Schwerin for a unique perspective.
· Evening: Enjoyed a solo dinner at a café in the Altstadt (old town) before catching the train back.
Top Tips for Solo Travelers:
· Bring a Tripod: The castle is incredibly photogenic, and a small tripod helps capture the perfect solo shot.
· Check for Events: The castle often hosts concerts and exhibitions—see if one aligns with your visit.
· Climb the Tower: If open, the tower offers panoramic views of the lake and city.
· Pack a Picnic: The gardens and lakeside are ideal for a quiet solo lunch.
Schwerin Castle was the ultimate fairytale day trip. Wandering its halls and gardens alone, I felt completely transported to another time—proof that the best adventures are the ones you design for yourself.
