There are 146 steps leading up to the main hall, which is decorated with murals depicting stories and legends of the Buddha. The temple is also filled with many valuable items, including large Chinese Buddha statues, golden lanterns, silver incense burners, Tibetan prayers, and many more. Another interesting point is Lamuyangcuo Lake in front of the temple, which is the best place to take pictures of the Songzanlin Monastery reflecting on the water. Tibetans here still maintain traditions that are held during festivals. For example, every year from December 26 to 29 according to the Tibetan calendar, the Gedong Festival is held. Today we visited Sungtseling Monastery, otherwise known as Guihuasi (Temple of Returning to Norms). This was fitting to us as China is now open again to travel, this being our first big trip in a year. After staying on the Shangrila plain the day before, it was magical to see the golden rooftops of the monastery glitter in to view. We hired some Tibetan style clothes for photos, but were most impressed by what we couldn’t capture - the vast and intricate paintings inside each of the temples.

#TravelChina This is a tourist destination I've wanted to visit for a long time. When I finally get the chance, I'll share my preparations before ascending. Songzanlin Monastery is the largest Lama Temple in Yunnan Province, located on a high mountain at over 3,000 meters above sea level. Our main preparations were: 1. Take Diamox the day before ascending (altitude sickness medication). 2. Carry canned oxygen with you at all times. 3. Wear adequate warm clothing, including gloves, a hat, socks, shoes, and an umbrella or raincoat. 4. Go to bed early, before 10 PM. A friend advised me not to shower or wash my hair, but I showered as usual. 5. It's recommended to check your blood oxygen level to see if it's adequate. If your oxygen level is low, you should immediately inhale canned oxygen. The next morning, upon arrival at the park, you'll need to buy a bus ticket up to Songzanlin Monastery. There are plenty of shuttle buses available. Upon reaching the temple, you'll have to climb hundreds of steps. If you're not comfortable with this, there are locally-owned vehicles available to take you up. Ask about prices. Inside Songzhanlin Temple, photography is prohibited in some areas. Be sure to check the signs. The temple boasts stunningly beautiful sculptures. We recommend taking a guided tour to see everything.
