The perpetual snow on its summit forms glaciers, composed of several peaks with the main peak standing at 7,546 meters above sea level, straddling the border between Tashkurgan and Akto County, and is one of the three highest peaks of the Eastern Pamir Plateau. Spanning 20 kilometers, the park offers views of majestic glaciers, the beauty of ice serpents, the diversity of ice towers and frozen landscapes, as well as exotic flowers, rare plants, and peculiar rocks. However, visiting Glacier No. 4 is the ultimate goal for all tourists, who are willing to endure altitude sickness and carry oxygen tanks without hesitation. At the visitor center, everyone queues to take a shuttle bus for over 20 minutes to reach the foot of the snow-capped mountains, then chooses to walk or ride a horse for 1,000 meters to the viewing point of Glacier No. 4, where the elevation marker of 4,688 meters stands out prominently. The ice tongue of Glacier No. 4 resembles a jade belt descending from the heavens, shimmering with a faint blue glow under the sunlight. Standing before the glacier on the crunching moraine rocks and touching the millennia-old ice with fingertips feels like grasping the pulse of frozen time. On the way back to Kashgar from Muztagh Ata Glacier Park, we gazed upon one of the world's famous peaks, "Kongur Tagh," with an elevation of 7,649 meters (often cited as 7,719 meters), the highest peak of the Western Kunlun Mountains. Kongur Tagh is pyramid-shaped, almost entirely composed of rock and ice, with steep slopes averaging about 45 degrees. Conquering Kongur Tagh is no less challenging than Mount Everest, especially its perilous northern slope, which remains unclimbed to this day. Under the clear afternoon sky, Kongur Tagh appeared deep blue, with sharp ice and snow ridges like knife edges. Suddenly looking back, when the pyramid-shaped summit pierced through the clouds, the entire mountain seemed to float in a halo of light, like the lingering ellipsis of our Southern Xinjiang journey, suspended in the sky, reluctant to fade away...

To visit, foreign travelers need a permit, which is easy to arrange in Kashgar. From there, it’s a stunning 🚐 5–6 hour ride (around 120 CNY) through vast highland landscapes. We stayed at Kainuoli Homestay 🏠, which we highly recommend for its comfort and lovely Tajik hosts. --- 🏯 Stone City: 2,500 Years of History The ancient Stone City Scenic Area is the main attraction in Tashkurgan — a fortress full of legends, ruins, and unforgettable views 🔥. 🏞️ At 3,112m above sea level and covering 10,700 m², Stone City is one of the Top 3 ancient stone cities in China 🇨🇳. It includes: 🧱 City walls & gates 🕌 Temple ruins 🛖 Residential remains Over the centuries, this place had many names: 📜 Puli Kingdom (Han Dynasty) ⚔️ Congling Shouzhuo (Tang Dynasty) 🗺️ Sarikol (13th century) 🏛️ Puli Ting (Qing Dynasty) Built from stone, mud, and tree branches, the inner city still shows signs of towers, carved wardrobes, chimney ducts, and a northeast gate. The outer city housed officials, temples, and residences. Even today, traces of its grandeur remain visible 🌬️. It’s incredible to imagine how, in such a harsh environment, ancient Tajiks built something so vast and elegant. 💪👏 🪧 In 1990, it became a protected heritage site in Xinjiang, and in 2001, a National Key Cultural Relic 🏛️. 🎫 Entrance: 40 CNY (foreigner). Officially you need to buy tickets in town, but we managed to get ours directly at the entrance with a little insistence 😉 🎟️ The ticket includes access to a small museum full of historical relics and Tajik cultural displays. 🌄 From the top of the fortress walls, the view of the majestic Mount Muztagh Ata (7,546 m) is absolutely breathtaking! 😍✨ --- 🍽️ Where to Eat On your way back to town, stop at 农章小锅抓饭 (Nongzhang Xiaoguo Zhuafan) for a delicious local meal 😋. Their plov (抓饭) is rich and flavorful 🍚, and they also serve tasty home-style Tajik and Uyghur dishes 🍢🥗. --- 🚶♀️ Around Town In the center of Tashkurgan, you’ll find clear traces of Tajik culture: murals, traditional houses, and friendly locals in traditional dress 🧕🎨. There’s also a museum across from the eagle statue roundabout 🦅, though it's currently closed — the exhibits have been moved to the Stone City exhibition hall. Take time to wander the streets, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy the unique crossroads of cultures this place represents 🌍❤️.

The lake reflects the majestic Muztagh Ata (冰山之父), and if you arrive when the wind is calm, the mirror-like surface is pure magic. Starting from Kashgar and traveling south along the Karakoram Highway, the scenery outside the car window gradually transitions from the desert to the glaciers and snow-capped mountains.
