Hulunbuir Autumn Paradise — Jiuka
Jiuka is located in Ergun City, Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, situated on the northern section of the China-Russia border highway (Ka Line). It starts from Shiwei Port in the north and extends south to Heishantou. The name comes from the historical border defense posts established here. This is an important node on Hulunbuir’s "Most Beautiful Grassland Sky Road," where grasslands and wetlands intertwine along the way. The Ergun River meanders through, facing Russian villages across the river. Mobile signals may roam internationally, so be sure to turn off automatic roaming.
Recommended Guide
Core Activities
Border Scenery Self-Drive: Starting from Shiwei, drive along the border highway passing Shuimo, Jiuka, Baka, and Qika. Along the way, you will see barbed wire fences, boundary markers, and warning signs such as "No Crossing" and "No Drones Allowed." The grasslands, rivers, and birch forests create a pristine natural painting. It is recommended to slow down and stop anytime for photos.
Ergun River Viewing: The Ergun River near Jiuka twists and turns. In summer, the grass is lush and green; in autumn, the birch forests turn golden. At dusk, you can watch the sunset by the river and experience the poetic scene of "the wind blowing the grass low, revealing cattle and sheep."
Nearby Attractions
Shiwei Port: A small town on the China-Russia border where you can experience Russian wooden log houses, Russian cuisine (such as Borodinsky bread and Russian borscht), and visit boundary markers and port scenery.
Heishantou: The best place to watch grassland sunsets. You can ride horses across the grasslands, experience herder life, join bonfire parties at night, and taste hand-held mutton and mare’s milk wine.
Ergun Wetland: Asia’s largest wetland. Climb the viewing platform to overlook the magnificent landscape where rivers and grasslands intertwine. In the early morning, the mist creates a fairyland atmosphere.
Birch Forest Scenic Area: A vast birch forest and reindeer tribe, perfect for walking and feeding reindeer. In autumn, golden fallen leaves cover the ground, making it a popular photography spot.
Notes
Safety and Signal: Some parts of the Ka Line are remote. Download offline maps in advance and keep your phone accessible. Follow border regulations, do not cross barbed wire fences or use drones without permission.
Best Season: From June to August, the grasslands are green and wildflowers bloom. From September to October, the autumn scenery is splendid. Temperatures are lower, so bring warm clothing.
Accommodation Suggestions: Accommodation in Jiuka is limited. You can choose Russian-style wooden log houses or Mongolian yurts in Shiwei or Heishantou, and experience stargazing camping (some campsites offer transparent dome tents).
Respect Customs: When passing herders’ grasslands, do not trample the grass or disturb cattle and sheep. When entering Russian or Mongolian households, follow the host’s guidance.
Food Recommendations
Grassland Lamb: Hand-held mutton and roasted lamb ribs, tender and free of gamey taste, served with chive flower sauce.
Russian Flavors: In Shiwei or Linjiang Village, try Russian Borodinsky bread, borscht, and Russian sausages, paired with kvass drinks.
River Fresh Fish: Wild fish from the Ergun River can be tried steamed or pan-fried at local restaurants along the route.
Itinerary Suggestion
It is recommended to include Jiuka in the "Shiwei—Heishantou" one-day tour route. Depart from Shiwei in the morning, drive along the Ka Line to Jiuka, have lunch at a herder’s home in Qika or Wuka, arrive at Heishantou in the afternoon to experience horse riding and watch the sunset, and stay overnight in a Mongolian yurt or Russian-style guesthouse to deeply experience the grassland and border culture.
