Shamian island is a sandbank island full of European architecture that located in Guangzhou. It is built in the mid 19th century for trading purpose but nowadays, this is a famous travel spots in this city.
If you travel here, this is one of the place that I highly recommend to kill the time and take pictures as the location is strategic at 6 km away from the CBD area of Tianhe district.
You can even rent a bike to explore the island and if you are tired, benches are everywhere in the area. Just sit there to enjoy the building would be another level of enjoyment during the trip with your love one.

Shamian Island: an oasis of tranquility in the urban Guangzhou
If you want to find a place in Guangzhou where you can feel the historical charm and relax at the same time, then Shamian Island is definitely the best choice. It is like a quiet oasis in the bustling city of Guangzhou, attracting many tourists to visit with its unique historical background and architectural style. This is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city!
The transportation here is very convenient. Take the subway to Huangsha Station and walk for about 10 minutes, and you will find yourself walking into a paradise full of historical charm. If I hadn’t carefully searched for places accessible by the Guangzhou Metro this time, I would never have known there was such a secret place in the city!
Architectural features: It’s like walking in an exotic alley
Because Shamian Island was once a concession in the mid-19th century, both Britain and France had consulates here, so the architectural styles here are diverse and have strong European colonial characteristics. You'll see some buildings with typically French elements, such as elegant balconies, symmetrical facades, and classical columns, but you'll also see English-style red brick buildings and other European-style buildings. Therefore, the architectural style of Shamian Island can be said to be a diverse and rich collection of European styles. There are many classical European-style buildings on Shamian Island, as if you have traveled to another era. These buildings have different styles, but they are all well preserved. Walking on these streets is like taking a journey where history and modernity blend. Those thick pillars and exquisite windows are really a good place to take photos, and any shot will be a blockbuster.
installation art
In the park on Shamian Island, there are many interesting installation arts, such as two interactive sculptures, which are full of movement and interest.
The park by the Pearl River has a casual and comfortable atmosphere. There are street performers everywhere in the leisure area adjacent to the Pearl River. Their performances make the entire park lively. The atmosphere here is very relaxing, suitable for you to walk around and relax yourself.
Pearl River scenery: the perfect integration of city and nature
Since Shamian Island is close to the Pearl River, the riverside scenery here is so beautiful that you can’t stop. In the afternoon, the breeze blows slowly. Whether you are standing by the river or sitting in the pavilion to rest, looking at the endless river and blue sky and white clouds, you will feel your whole heart calm down. Especially when the weather is good, the river surface is sparkling and the buildings in the distance look particularly spectacular in the sunshine. If you have the opportunity to come here at dusk or night, it will be a visual feast. The lights are reflected in the river, which is so beautiful that it is unforgettable.
Shamian Island is really a place worth visiting again and again. Whether you want to take beautiful photos, take a walk, or just find a place to relax, you will not be disappointed here.

My friends thought I had gone abroad, but I am in Guangzhou
Guangzhou, Shamian Island.
It is a sandbar formed by the Pearl River, hence the name Shamian. In the early days, Shamian was an important port in Guangzhou. After a hundred years, more than a dozen countries have set up consulates on Shamian, nine foreign banks, more than forty foreign companies operated on Shamian, and the Guangdong Customs Club, Guangzhou Club and others were established on Shamian. With the changes in modern history, Shamian has become a microcosm of China's modern history and the history of concessions. The European-style buildings on Shamian Island have formed a unique open-air architectural 'museum'.
Surrounded by ancient trees, shaded by green trees, and fragrant with flowers🌸The sun jumps between the leaves, and from time to time you can hear the birds singing🕊Wandering among these colorful ancient buildings🏰Everywhere is beautiful scenery, free and comfortable, lazy and casual.
Every day there are many photography enthusiasts to check in📸Literary and artistic small shops, coffee shops☕️, French restaurants🍽Guangzhou is in a hurry, Shamian is leisurely. Feel the unique Cantonese romance!💕

A historical European oasis in Guangzhou
Shamian Island is my favourite place in Guangzhou and it was my safe haven during my 6 months living there, it was an oasis of calm in such a chaotic city. The Island was divided into concessions given to France and the UK in the 19th century and foreigners lived and worked on the island to help support the export of Chinese products. The island is separated from the mainland by a small river and this created a self contained zone that allowed western nations to establish trade missions without ‘being present’ on the mainland. Ultimately America, France, Holland, Italy, Germany, Portugal, japan and the UK had a presence on the island in big stone mansions along the water.
The buildings now house cafes, restaurants and shops and has become a surreal tourist destination, the buildings lining the street were built in the style of their respective western powers so it feels like you could be in Paris, London or Amsterdam. The buildings are grand and imposing as each nation tried to outdo the other with their architectural styles, leaving tree lined boulevards lined with buildings that stand out against the Chinese city that has developed around them.
You can reach the island via the Huangsha metro station and then walking over an overpass, also many bus routes have stops just outside the bridge that links the island to greater Guangzhou.
I’d really recommend this to anyone living in or visiting Guangzhou who is overwhelmed by the sheer scale and pace of the city, I used to love taking a book or my laptop to the Starbucks and just enjoying the peace.

Another beautiful island of China
To visit this island, just go to Guangzhou. The island is small, it is connected by a small bridge. You can take a taxi from the city and drive to it. We can say that the whole island is a cultural attraction. There are more than 150 European-style buildings: banks, churches, schools, embassies. Many Chinese people come here to take wedding photos. If you just want to walk, you only need one hour. But it is more interesting to walk and feel the atmosphere of this place, take photos, drink coffee in a beautiful place. Then you will feel the atmosphere of this place. There is no loud music, very quiet and calm. There are no big shops from which sellers shout.

Feels like in the a movie 🎥
❗️It’s called an island because it’s surrounded by rivers. It’s a small stylish area for taking photos, walking around and enjoying evening tea or morning coffee.
🚇 Around 5 minutes walk from Huangsha subway station (line 1 and 6).
🛍 There are many shopping malls nearby but not in the island.
🍝 Restaurants are not too many but you will find something to eat for sure. There are many coffees in the island and some hotels as well.
🕑 I usually spend around 3-4 hours to walk around, eat ice cream and enjoy music.

A stroll and late lunch on Shamian Island
Shamian island is a spectacular little area to explore with its quaint coffee shops, restaurants and plenty of historical buildings. Strolling through the area does have one feeling as thriugh you've been shuttled through time. #timetravel
We had a lovely dining experience at ”The Orient Express” which not only had a spectacular menu but a terrific wine selection. The restaurant itself is a dining cart of an old train which makes for a rather cozy atmosphere.
It was a really relaxed day of strolling and dining and I'm very much looking forward to heading back there. I spent so much time enjoying my surroundings that I barely took any pictures.

Welcome to Shamian Island - Guangzhou
Shamian Island is a small island on the Pearl River, located in Liwan District of Guangzhou.
You can go there and enjoy European style architecture as once the island was used as a consular area in the past.
Definitely a most see place in Guangzhou! Where you can enjoy not only the architecture, but also please yourself in one of the many restaurants.
Once you cross the bridge and step on the island it feels like you are in another world, a world where you can relax and enjoy your time away from the outside noise and everyday rush.
In my opinion the most majestic building on the island is the mint blue Starbucks building!

Shamian island, 沙面岛。Guangzhou. This island is very important historical place. Earlier, there were located all foreign trade confessions and office buildings, because at that time foreign merchants were not allowed to step into Canton land as well as other places in China. Further, it became the place of foreign consulate and embassies. All this beautiful buildings representing European architectural style are the consulates and embassies.
Well, it was pretty interesting to take a walk and look at them. The place has its own charm.

A Glimpse of Time: A Leisurely European Journey in Shamian
Walking into Shamian in Guangzhou feels like stepping onto a European island frozen in time. The winding streets are lined with classical buildings, shaded by trees, creating an elegant scene with Roman columns, spires, and arched windows. It's understated yet sophisticated.
Strolling along the paths, sunlight filters through the leaves, casting shadows on the ground, while a gentle breeze brings the fresh scent of the Pearl River. The church bells ring softly, like a melody from a bygone era. Resting in a tranquil park, surrounded by the music of street performers and the murmurs of passersby, time seems to slow down, and every moment feels so leisurely.
Shamian is not only a witness to history but also a microcosm of Guangzhou's culture. On this land where East meets West, prosperity and tranquility coexist, and the classical blends with the modern. Looking back at Shamian from the banks of the Pearl River, the long history intertwines with the present beauty, adding a rich and touching poetic charm to the city.

Shamian Island: An Open Air Museum of History in Guangzhou
#travelgram
Shamian Island is separated from the mainland of Chuangzhou only by a narrow arm of the Pearl River, however, it creates the impression of a place far removed from it both in space and time. With its appearance, it recreates the appearance of Guangzhou in the era of European colonization. There are practically no traditional Chinese houses on the island, instead there are mansions decorated with stucco, characteristic of European architecture at the beginning of the last century, bridges, as if descended from a French Impressionist painting, numerous cafes, eateries and restaurants, two churches, Notre Dame de Lourdes and the Church of Christ, as well as a lot of greenery: boulevards, squares, parks. The island "rebooted" due to many tourist visits. Also, its chamber size, lack of transport and high-rise buildings, many trees and beautiful views of the Pearl River allow you to "slow down" and relax, while not breaking away from civilization.
The distinctive appearance of Shamian Island is explained by its history. For almost a hundred years, the island belonged to the colonialists. It came under the jurisdiction of Great Britain and France in 1861, after the end of the Second Opium War. Thus, the island became a piece of Europe in Asia. The colonialists approached the development of their territory responsibly: they organized self-government, erected residential and administrative buildings, business offices, banks, hotels, even took care of the souls of their compatriots, built two churches, opened foreign consulates and official representative offices, including the Soviet one. When Shamian was handed back to China in 1949, several decades later authorities became convinced of its tourist attractiveness exactly as it is, and in 1996 recognized Shamian as an object of cultural significance. Shamian Island attracts not so much with specific sights as with the atmosphere and general impression. However, there is still something to see in it. The main of the three boulevards consists of attractions a little less than completely. Almost every building has commemorative plaques telling which country they were the consulate or representative office of. For example, the Soviet consulate was stationed in house No. 68. The former "house" of Soviet citizens looks beautiful, but does not stand out from the general row of mansions of the beginning of the last century. Currently, most of these buildings house cafes and restaurants, so if you wish, you can see them from the inside.
