A Boxing Day tradition in Bolton is to climb Rivington Pike, the highest point in the area. You will find many other hikers making the climb. The tower at the peak was a beacon, used as an early warning system in case of an invasion by the Scots. This was a particularly foggy day, but the mists descended into the vales giving us a unique view from above the clouds. #bolton #rivingtonpike

🇬🇧 📍Bolton - Winter Hill - The Pigeon Tower - Rivington Pike ⏰Duration: 5 hours (including time to take video and photo) 🚆Public Transport from Manchester: ✔️ Starting Point 1. Take train from Piccadailly to Bolton station 2. From Bolton Interchange take 526 Bus to Barrow Bridge Finish Point 1. From Old Lord's Crescent take 525 Bus to Bolton 2. Take train from Bolton to Piccadailly Route: Bolton Train > Barrow Bridge > Winter Hill - The Pigeon Tower - Rivington Pike > Roynton Rd Difficulty: 3/5 I have download two offline route maps in All Trials Apps and combined to be this route. The first part of my route, I have followed "Winter Hill, Rivington Pike and Two Lads". The second part of my route, I have followed little bit from "Rivington Pike and Lower Rivongton". The first half part is quite muddy, highly not recommend to go on rainy day. Also, you must need to keep your eyes on the offline map to make sure you are on the track. The Pigeon Tower was commissioned and erected by Lever as a birthday present to his wife, Elizabeth Ellen. It offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Rivington Pike situated at most westerly point on Winter Hill. It is a popular attraction, suitable to go there with your pet and child. It is one of the best view point in North West England. The route are well paved and maintained. You will see the clear and fantastic view from here (if the weather is nice). The way back from Rivington Pike to the bus station, it will be a route full of sheeps. Please be careful and respect, don't touch or disturb them:) If you want to bring your pet and child to go there, I will suggest only follow the last half part, start at Roynton Rd, then Rivington Pike, The Pigeon Tower, and back.
