Quanzhou for architecture & culture lovers !
Vibrant city to enjoy for at least 2 days for culture, architecture and food.
Few worth it half-day trips around doable by didi.
Active by day and night !
Visit the temple of the Queen of heaven in the morning then hang out around and through its southern streets during market time. Go back after sunset for a busy and messy atmosphere.
Go to Kaiyuan temple in the afternoon and hang out on Xi jie, have tea and watch the sunset from one of the rooftop. Favorite one Baishui Haoxi, a nice-edgy renovated Republic of China building (around 1930).
Get lost in the small streets and you will see small family temples built at every other corner.
Other great temples, Confucian temple, Chengtian temple, Tonghuai temple, to see both by day and pass by by night.
Stay at the Dongmian inn nearby the Chengtian temple, great host and ideal location.
A half-day trip to Xunpucun is easy by didi, this village has old houses with walls built out of oysters shell, unique.
Good destination for seafood and fish. A must try is also the ginger duck, a stewed duck long-cooked in iron pot with tones of ginger.

Entering the Tianhou Palace, it was shocked by the "Mi turtle" in front of it. The original tortoise that was originally prepared for the Lantern Festival has already been finished. More than 10,000 bags of rice are layered and piled up into a shape of a turtle. Turtles have always been a symbol of longevity and auspiciousness. People are not only seeking peace, seeking for children, but also seeking for wealth. On the day of the 15th lunar month of the first month of the first month, the Tianhou Palace will hold a rice turtle eye-catching event. The eye-cut turtle will pray more for the turtle.

Here is a one-day Quanzhou travel guide:
Morning:
- 8:00 - 9:00: Arrive at Quanzhou West Street. West Street is the earliest developed street in Quanzhou, and it is full of the atmosphere of Minnan culture. You can taste Quanzhou's characteristic breakfast, Mianxianhu, at a street food stall. Mianxianhu is smooth and refreshing, and you can add ingredients like vinegar pork, large intestine, and shrimp according to your taste. Pair it with a deep-fried dough stick, and the taste is simply divine. While enjoying your breakfast, admire the arcade buildings on West Street and the morning market life.
- 9:00 - 10:30: Walk to Kaiyuan Temple. Kaiyuan Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian Province, with a long history and deep cultural heritage. After entering Kaiyuan Temple, admire the magnificence of the East and West Pagodas, which are iconic landmarks of Quanzhou. The exquisite carvings on the pagodas showcase the superb craftsmanship of ancient artisans. Quanzhou: The Shining Pearl of Mazu Belief—Tianhou Temple
Quanzhou, this ancient city, seems to be gently favored by the gods, its rich religious culture like the stars in the ancient city, dazzling and brilliant. Among them, Tianhou Temple is the shining pearl of Mazu belief on this land.
In the Minnan region, there are many Tianhou Temples, all of which are testimonies to the devout belief in the sea goddess Mazu. However, Quanzhou's Tianhou Temple stands out with its large scale and grand momentum, making it the leader among Mazu temples nationwide.
Tianhou Temple, originally named Tianfei Temple, has undergone changes in its name over history. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, after General Shi Lang successfully recovered Taiwan, he petitioned the court to confer the title of Tianhou on Mazu. Since then, Quanzhou's Tianfei Temple was renamed Tianhou Temple, becoming an important holy site for Mazu belief.
Entering Tianhou Temple, the first thing that catches the eye is the imposing mountain gate. This gate, in the form of a paifang, has four dragon-entwined columns on either side, with lifelike qilin, and the dragon and phoenix reliefs on the roof are exquisite, all showcasing the magnificence and majesty of Tianhou Temple.
The main hall's roof is a nine-ridge double-eaved hip-and-gable roof, with both ends curving upwards like bird wings ready to fly, giving a sense of soaring. Opposite the main hall is a unique stage. The wooden structure with dougong brackets, painted and decorated, is full of rich Minnan style, making people stop and admire.
As the core building of Tianhou Temple, the Tianhou Hall's wooden structure with double-eaved hip-and-gable roof design, along with dragon and phoenix and various painted decorations, all highlight Mazu's noble status. Walking through it, one can feel the Mazu belief permeating every corner, and a sense of piety and reverence arises spontaneously.
Even those without Mazu belief will be influenced by the atmosphere here. Tianhou Temple is not just a temple, but a witness to history and a cultural heritage. It allows us to feel the faith and emotions of the people of Quanzhou and makes us cherish this precious cultural heritage even more.

Quanzhou | Two days and two nights
🚶♀️
Day1: Morning flight, arrive at noon, first go to the homestay next to West Street to drop off luggage. West Street (Zeng's Old Remembered Noodle Paste, lunch) - Kaiyuan Temple - Bell Tower - Chengtian Temple - Guanyue Temple - Qingjing Temple - rest with fruit tea - Wen Temple - Zhongshan Road Cultural Street - Huaxiang Catholic Church - A Shan Ginger Duck (dinner) - Puppet Theater (18:00 show) - West Street (late-night snack)
Day2: Tianhou Palace - Fumei Xiao Wangye's Palace - Wulin Ancient Village - Green Island Seafood Restaurant (lunch) - Luojia Temple - Xunpu Village - West Street
Day3: Return flight
Noodle paste, ginger duck, four-fruit soup, vinegar meat, clam pancake, beef offal soup, beef soup, dry mixed noodles, matsutake buns (Green Island), pot sighting, steak, taro crispy duck, Auntie's chicken rack, mochi, braised noodles were all tasted. Highly recommend the noodle paste, clam pancake, Green Island, taro crispy duck; Auntie's chicken rack is very ordinary, although you can order with a QR code and get online reminders for meal pickup, it's not worth queuing for.
Day1 except for the taxi from the airport to West Street and back and forth to the Puppet Theater, the rest was on foot; Day2 was all by taxi.
Huaxiang Catholic Church, Xunpu Village (if not wearing flowers) can be skipped, they are very average, and so is the Bell Tower. West Street has Li Coffee Shop rooftop check-in (requires in-store consumption, the main entrance is in a small alley), Guanyue Temple, Luojia Temple are very beautiful.
Puppet Theater requires advance ticket grabbing on the official WeChat account, a show is 60min, and it's really worth watching.
It's not possible to hail a taxi near Tianhou Palace, so walked to the side of Fumei Xiao Wangye's Palace to take a taxi, no need to go there specially.
The city's kapok and bougainvillea are blooming, bustling with flowers, and everywhere there are Southern Fujian temples, old districts, Western romantic, Southeast Asian style, and Southern Fujian tradition, Quanzhou is really special, indeed half the city is mundane and half is celestial.
Walking in the alleys, the wind blowing in the face is cool and refreshing, mixed with some floral fragrance. The houses on the street, the small parks, the streets themselves are very much like our childhood homes, more like our childhood hometown than our current hometown. I had this feeling before in Nanping, Fujian seems to have pressed the pause button on time.

Quanzhou Tianhou Palace

Quanzhou|Tianhou Palace|A temple, a city
There are many historical sites in the urban area of Quanzhou, among which the "Tianhou Palace of Quanzhou" is a must-see. The Tianhou Palace of Quanzhou has always been considered the highest architectural standard and the largest temple for worshiping Mazu at home and abroad.
The famous Tianhou Palace, which was built in the early period of Mazu's enfeoffment in the Song Dynasty, with its three-tiered eave hip roof, highlights its lofty status, and the southern Fujian red brick gives it a noble color.
From an aerial view, the city wall of Deji Gate can fall, and the Tianhou Palace still guards the south of Quanzhou Prefecture. For hundreds of years, the incense of Mazu has accompanied the sea-crossing ancestors from here, along the Maritime Silk Road to the sea, to Taiwan, Nanyang and the other shore.

The city that surprised me the most this year, I'm enthusiastically recommending Quanzhou, Fujian!!
Since Quanzhou was successfully listed as a World Heritage Site last year, it has been on my travel list. I really like the slow pace of Quanzhou, where the carriages are slow, the time is slow, and I regret not coming to Quanzhou until this year😕
Bai Yansong once commented on Quanzhou, 'Quanzhou is a city that you should visit at least once in your lifetime.' I suggest you save the travel guide that I spent a day organizing❗️
🚉How to get there
🔸Take the high-speed train directly to Quanzhou
🔸Fly to Xiamen/Fuzhou, then take the high-speed train to Quanzhou (there are also many places that can fly directly to Quanzhou)

🔸What I find amazing is that the buses in Quanzhou are sightseeing cars🚎 that stop when you wave, and 2 yuan can buy a whole day of happiness!
🔸When you come to Quanzhou, you must experience the intangible cultural heritage projects, such as Quanzhou lanterns, puppet shows, Xunpu women's costumes, Nanyin, etc.

Quanzhou Tianhou Palace (Part 1)
Quanzhou Tianhou Palace is located on Tianhou Road, Licheng District, Quanzhou City. The Tianhou Palace was built in the second year of Qingyuan in the Southern Song Dynasty (1196), covering an area of more than 6,800 square meters. The main buildings include the mountain gate, stage, east and west que, main hall, east and west corridors, sleeping hall, corner pavilion, dressing building, etc. It is the oldest, largest, and highest standard temple for worshipping the sea god Mazu, and it is also an extremely important center for the spread of Mazu belief in history.

City C's Debut Plan / Quanzhou Tianhou Palace
Quanzhou, a city where gods check in, gods from all over the world have a place here. Among them, Mazu, who has the home field advantage, has many temples here. The goddess in charge of maritime navigation has many believers here. The tickets for the Tianhou Palace are free. It was under maintenance when I went, but there were still many believers from nearby cities to worship. There is a small exhibition hall in the Tianhou Palace that is quite interesting, overall it's good.

It reminds me of a poem: The spring scenery in the garden cannot be contained, a branch of red apricot climbs over the wall and reaches the top, overlooking the entire city. You can't burn incense, but you can pray for blessings (I heard it's very accurate for seeking marriage).
