#shinsider With COVID restrictions still going strong in Mainland China, we decided to stay in Shanghai for the country’s week-long public holiday: National Week, otherwise known as “Golden Week”. While this caused a major feeling of FOMO, we made the most of our time by exploring parts of Shanghai we’d never been to before…realising just how big and diverse this city actually is! Located on the outskirts of Shanghai, in Qingpu District, we made our way to Qingxu Country Park to witness first-hand the famed Water Forest. Surprisingly, it took some work to actually get there, so I’m laying it all out for you here to make your alternative day trip that little bit easier when you need some respite from the Shanghai’s bustling city center. Qingxi Country Park is comprised of everything from wetlands and lakes to woods and fish ponds, with Dalian Lake sitting squarely in the center of the overall park; covering around 22 square kilometers of land, you would probably want to aim at setting aside at least 3-4 hours if you want to walk around to the main sites by foot. During the weekend we drove from Shanghai city to Qingpu area…at Qingxi Countryside Park, the highlight is a big water forest…the water level about 1-2 meters in the forest. Inside this park also has the ecological farm for organic vegetables, fish farm and big ares of rice farm. The best time to visit maybe in spring or fall. In summer it is so hot as we need to walk very long distance inside to go to the water forest area. But this place is recommended to visit once if you are in Shanghai #nationalpark

Self-driving (recommended): Park at P2 and take a shuttle bus directly to the entrance of the water forest. This is recommended for lazy people. Parking fee: CNY15/time; shuttle bus: CNY20/person (roundtrip). This will save you a lot of time. 🌟 Highlights: Water metasequoia forest, only accessible by foot, about 2 kilometers roundtrip. After exiting the station, I walked to the bus stop and transferred to Jinze Bus No. 7. About 40 minutes later, I arrived at Qingxi Country Park Station. Along the way, the scenery of lakes and water gradually intensified, and the hustle and bustle of the city quietly faded away, replaced by the tranquility of the countryside. What came into view was the vast water wetland, with boardwalks winding through the reeds, and occasionally, egrets skimming over the water, gently rippling the surface. Following the wetland route, I reached the park's core attraction—the Water Forest. This 60-acre pond cypress forest grows in shallow water, lush with greenery in spring, with egrets resting among the trees, creating the spectacle of "cypress forest and egret shadows." The ecological conservation area requires an ID card for free entry, with wooden boardwalks running through the forest, making it feel like a water maze. Turning to the lakeside route, the rippling waters of Dalian Lake, with three islands connected in the center, and wildflowers adorning the shore. The fishing village leisure experience area on the north side retains the original ecological village, with white-walled, black-tiled farmhouses interwoven with fish ponds, occasionally seeing villagers rowing boats and selling freshly caught river fish. The uniqueness of Qingxi Country Park lies in the symbiosis of its "wetland genes" and cultural heritage. As the only country park in Shanghai characterized by wetlands, it is home to 185 species of birds, including the rare Chinese merganser. On the way back, the sun set in the west, and the reeds along Lianxi Road were gilded with a golden edge. Qingxi Country Park uses wetlands as paper and ecology as ink, painting a Jiangnan ink painting far from the hustle and bustle. Qingxi Countryside Park is a recommended lesser-known park around Shanghai, an excellent natural oxygen bar and a summer retreat. Compared to the now popular Gongqing National Forest Park, it has far fewer visitors because it is also a habitat for many bird species, making it relatively quiet. The most distinctive feature here is the water forest. Walking through it feels like entering a forest oxygen bar, where you can breathe in the fresh air! Here, you can take a small boat to navigate through, just like in a green wonderland. Another major feature is the lotus flowers. The park is large, with several big lotus ponds. Although camping and picnicking are not allowed, you can still see some people dragging camping gear back and forth, setting up tents and having picnics inside. The security guards nearby don't seem to mind, probably because there are so few campers that they don't bother to enforce the rules... The downside is that it's quite far from the city center, located in Qingpu District, so it's best to drive there. Travel tips: It's mostly free, and there are many farmhouses around. If you don't want to spend money, you can bring your own picnic. You can take the scenic area electric car, but on weekends it's crowded. We arrived around noon and had to wait 40 minutes for the electric car. You can also ride a HelloBike, which costs 15 yuan per ride.

Nearly one-third of the park's area is covered by water, and the lush green natural environment attracts a multitude of birds to reside here all year round. To date, there are 185 known bird species, including the nationally protected Scaly-sided Merganser; there are 39 species under second-class national protection, such as the Kingfisher and Black-eared Kite. This water forest is known as the "Chi Shan Marvel." Chi Shan, an amphibious plant, will grow many aerial roots from its base for respiration if it lives in water for a long time, resembling a group of "Buddha statues." The swelling of Chi Shan's roots also facilitates breathing. The aerial roots of Chi Shan not only help the plant breathe but also provide support, making it more stable. However, there have been reports in the south that due to these "Tree Root Bodhisattvas" emerging from the ground, many believers have come to worship, burn incense, and pray for the blessing of the "Tree Root Bodhisattvas" under the Chi Shan trees. This time, I went to try out a homestay in Caibang Village, Qingpu, and incidentally checked in at Shanghai's only country park characterized by wetlands - Qingxi Country Park. Here, you will encounter a rich variety of aquatic plants, migratory birds that dwell here, and enchanting natural landscapes. The park has it all: wetlands, lakes, forests, rivers, and a wealth of species resources. The water forest here can be said to be a unique feature of the park. We parked our car near the village committee of Lianhu Village, at the entrance of the Lotus on the Lake Restaurant, and then started our hike around the Great Lotus Lake. Our hiking route: Lianhu Village → Lianxin Island → Wetland Lotus Pond → Great Lotus Lake Service Station → Lakeside Trail → Shuiyang Wetland → Qingyun Wild Path → Ecological Conservation Area Entrance → Fir and Egret Shadows → Peach Blossom Crossing → Water Forest → Ecological Conservation Area Exit → Yongjing Hermitage → Lakeside Trail → Lianhu Village, Upon entering the park, the first thing you feel is the tranquility and harmony.
