"Saul Leiter: Through the Window" photo exhibition planned and exhibited at Picnic Cafe in Namdaemun. Saul Leiter is not a photographer we are familiar with. The most common expressions that describe him are 'pioneer of color photography' or 'master of street photography'. His photographs, which capture everyday scenes of New York in the 1950s in a painterly manner, had a significant visual influence on the film Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and directed by Todd Haynes. In his angles, fashion models are often seen standing behind reflective glass windows, half-hidden, or fragmented by multiple mirrors. Saul Leiter did not want to use his photography to criticize society or deliver messages like his colleagues, and instead, he felt greater joy and fulfillment in discovering small beauties in the lives surrounding him. However, the beauty he captures is not the face of a celebrity, an overwhelming landscape, or a dazzling object, but rather something trivial and simple, so the scenery outside the window covered in raindrops, the shoes of a woman trying to get on a taxi, or the construction waste piled up on one side of a construction site could have been the subjects. I couldn't believe that there was such a leisurely place in the middle of Seoul. Piknic was a place where I went to see an exhibition, but it ended up being a place where I got absorbed in the space and atmosphere.
