Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and also the most populous and economically developed metropolitan area in the Caribbean region.
In Spanish, 'Santo Domingo' means 'Sunday'. In 1492, the Spanish adventurer Columbus first set foot in what is now the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, on a Sunday, which is the origin of the name Santo Domingo.
The urban area of Santo Domingo is divided into the old town and the new town. The old town is listed as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO. It is the oldest European colonial settlement in the Americas. Undoubtedly, the old town, composed of 10 blocks, is a treasure of history and architecture. Narrow cobblestone streets are lined with Spanish-style colonial buildings. The old town has been in existence for over five hundred years, hence Santo Domingo is known as the 'First City of America (Ciudad Primada de América)'.
During the Age of Discovery, Santo Domingo was the platform for European colonizers to explore and conquer the New World of the Americas, known as the 'Gateway to the Caribbean Sea and the American continent'. Now, the old town is a famous tourist destination in the Caribbean Sea.
