A relaxed riverside picnic in Seoul
Want to really experience life like the Seoul locals do? Then spend a lazy evening with a picnic on Nodeul Island!
Like many places in Seoul, this island was absolutely packed once I arrived. But unlike most of the tourist hotspots I’d visited, Nodeul was mainly filled with local young people who were meeting friends and enjoying the last few days of summer sun. In fact, my Korean friend who brought me here said the island had only recently become a popular spot, and it was her first time visiting too. So you’ve got a chance to see these beautiful views early!
From this tiny island you can gaze out at the surrounding Han river, the distant Seoul cityscape, and watch the sky’s colours change with the setting sun. If you stay until dark, you can even see Seoul’s dazzling night lights reflected in the water.
The ideal thing to do on the island is enjoy a riverside picnic. You can easily bring your own snacks, but I recommend bringing out your real inner local and ordering delivery food! You’ll see plenty of delivery drivers arriving at the island’s bus stop.
There’s even an option to rent out picnic sets. You’ll spot many people using hired fold-out tables, mats, and cute, colourful lights.
Getting to the island is super easy too, with several bus and subway lines passing straight through it. And if you’re more of a driver, there’s a few parking lots right next door too!
I’d recommend visiting in spring or autumn, so it’s not too hot and not too cold. My trip was in early October, and the temperature was perfect for a relaxed evening outdoors. So if these seasons fit your travel plans, make sure to give Nodeul island a visit and take a break from Seoul’s lively city life!
