Mountain climbing
Mount Agung is an active volcano located in eastern Bali, rising 3,142 meters above sea level. It is considered sacred by locals, who believe it to be the "center of the world." As a sign of respect, residents often make offerings in the shape of Mount Agung. July to September is the best time to climb Mount Agung. However, climbing is prohibited during religious ceremonies. The Balinese believe that violating this rule will bring divine punishment. From Bali's highest point, climbing to the summit offers panoramic views of the entire island. The mountain is home to one of Bali's oldest and largest Hindu temple complexes, with Besakih Temple, the main temple, located midway up the mountain. The temple hosts an annual ceremony dedicated to Mount Agung and the gods, a grand and spectacular occasion. Climbing Route: There are two routes, both of which require a guide. Due to the dense forest below the mountainside and the numerous forking paths, it's easy to get lost. There are two popular routes: one starting from Pura Besakih and the other ascending the southern slope from Pura Pasar Agung. The Pura Besakih Route: This route leads to the summit, offering panoramic views of almost all of Bali's beauty. However, the climb is somewhat challenging, especially as it becomes steeper near the summit. This route is approximately 2,200 meters long and takes about six hours to reach the summit and five hours to return. The Pura Besakih route is longer than the other route, requiring a 6:00 AM departure to arrive before nightfall. Some guides are willing to take visitors up the mountain at midnight, allowing them to watch the sunrise from the summit. The visitor center at the Pura Besakih entrance can recommend experienced guides. The Pura Pasar Agung Route: This route begins at Pura Pasar Agung Temple, located on the southern slope of the volcano. It ascends along the lower edge of the crater rim but does not reach the summit of Mount Agung. Despite this, you can still enjoy the wonderful scenery of eastern and southern Bali on this road. This route takes 3 to 4 hours, and most people start very early, usually around 4 am. To ensure that you arrive at the starting point early, you can spend the night in the small village of Sebudi near the temple.
