Located in Qiangshan Village, Lantau Island, Lingyin Temple is a Buddhist temple with a long history. It was founded by Master Zhenwei and Master Lingxi in 1928. Master Lingxi originally came to Hong Kong from Dinghushan, Guangdong to preach Buddhism. Master Zhenwei was seriously ill when he was building the temple in Qiangshan, so he was invited to succeed him as abbot. The master practiced farming and meditation and spread Buddhism. During its heyday, there were 600 to 700 believers, making Lingyin Temple an important Buddhist temple in the area. The temple complex includes five main buildings, which retain the traditional stone walls and wooden doors. Later, the Ksitigarbha Hall, the Weituo Maitreya Hall, the Dharma Protector Hall and the Mahavira Hall were added. Next to the Dharma Protector Hall is the Linggong Memorial Pavilion, which commemorates Master Lingxi who passed away in 1960. The pavilion is engraved with his life inscriptions. The layout of the temple is solemn. From the Maitreya Hall, you can climb the stairs to the Guanyin Hall, where Guanyin, the Sixth Patriarch and other Bodhisattvas are enshrined; the Mahavira Hall is built against the mountain and is very popular. The three treasures of Buddhism are enshrined in the hall. Lingyin Temple is famous for ancient couplets such as "With all my heart and soul, I build a perfect temple and then I will give in", which shows the spirit of the founder of the temple. Today, it is not only a place of pilgrimage for believers, but also attracts tourists to explore the local Buddhist culture and natural Zen because of its scenery with green mountains, red walls and green tiles.
