Hemis Monastery was founded by the King of Ladakh in the 17th century and continues to attract worshippers as the headquarters of the Drukpa (Red Cap) sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
The white walls and reddish-brown décor of the building blend beautifully with the hues of the mountains, creating a picturesque setting. The spectacular Hemis Festival is held every June, featuring a colorful masked dance called Cham.

The temple grounds are home to an attached museum, showcasing treasures from Tibetan Buddhist art spanning hundreds of years, including ancient thangkas (Buddhist paintings), gold and silver Buddha statues, and intricate ritual implements.
