Suzhou's Hidden Gem: The Unique Charm of Ke Garden
Among the many gardens in Suzhou, there is a little-known niche attraction, which is Ke Garden. This garden is located next to Canglang Pavilion. Although it seems inconspicuous, it has a unique charm and has become a pleasant surprise for my trip to Suzhou.
Transportation Guide
To reach Ke Garden, you can take Metro Line 4 to "Sanyuanfang Station" and walk to the garden after exiting the station. In addition, you can also take bus No. 1, 5, 101, etc., and get off at "Sanyuanfang Station" or "Gongren Wenhuagong South Station" and walk to the garden.
🎫Ticket Information
The ticket price of Ke Garden is very affordable. It costs only CNY 25 in peak season (April–May, July–October) and only CNY 20 in off-season (November–March, June). For seniors over 70 years old and children under 1.4 meters, admission is free. Students and seniors can also enjoy a half-price discount. In addition, it is very convenient to buy tickets on site, and no reservation is required in advance.
⌛️Opening Hours
The opening hours of Ke Garden are also very user-friendly. The opening hours in peak season and off-season are slightly different, but they all start at 7:30 am and last until the evening. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy different beautiful scenery in the garden.
🏰Featured Attractions
Although Ke Garden is small, it has a unique flavor. The buildings in the garden are built around Yiqing Pond. The water in the pond is clear, and it complements the surrounding buildings. Yiqing Hall, Xuegu Hall, Yiyu Hall, and other attractions are distributed in the garden, and every corner is full of historical charm. The winding corridor connects with the pond, making people feel like they are in an ink painting. The courtyard is clear and bright, and the water and trees are bright and clear, showing the unique style of the academy garden.
💡Tips
When visiting Ke Garden, it is recommended that visitors pay attention to the guide map in the garden, so that they can better understand the layout and distribution of attractions in the garden. At the same time, please keep quiet during the tour and respect the environment and history in the garden.
Although Ke Garden is not big, it has a unique charm. Its tranquility, simplicity, and beauty make people linger. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and find a quiet garden to relax, then Ke Garden is definitely a good choice.

The morning is the best time to visit the Suzhou gardens
At 7:50 AM, I arrived at Canglang Pavilion. There weren't many tourists, so I took lots of photos.
At 8:00 AM, more tourists started to arrive.
At 8:10 AM, I left and went to Keyuan Garden. I was the second visitor, haha. Keyuan Garden is much less famous than Canglang Pavilion. The academy garden has only been restored and opened to the public in the last two years! There was a small duck 🦆 in the garden that hadn't fully grown yet, super cute. I played with it for a while!
After visiting the garden, I rode my electric bike to work!
The entrance fee for Canglang Pavilion is 20 yuan, and for Keyuan Garden, it's 25 yuan. Both are not very large. The garden card is free!
MELODY WILKERSON
Over 500 years earlier than the Humble Administrator's Garden, Suzhou's sole academy classical garden—Ke Garden
Ke Garden is the oldest garden in Suzhou. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Ke Garden was part of the Canglang Pavilion. Today, it faces the Canglang Pavilion across the river. Although the garden is not large, it has a complete range of scenery. The initial construction of the garden can be traced back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, and it was also known as 'Jinshanlin' and 'Leyuan'.
The name 'Leyuan' embodies the idea that 'benevolent people enjoy mountains, wise people enjoy waters'. During the Qianlong era, a historian mistakenly thought it meant 'the joy of revelry', believing that 'revelry cannot be taught', hence the name was changed to 'Ke Garden'.
In the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty (1805), the Governor of Jiangsu founded the Suzhou Zhengyi Academy, and during the Daoguang era (1827), Ke Garden was incorporated into the Zhengyi Academy. In the Guangxu era, the 'Xuegutang' was built, housing the 'Bo Yue' book collection with more than 80,000 volumes. It is unexpected that the official academies of ancient times had such rich collections of books. One can only imagine the spirit of the students who studied there, whose writing would flow with divine inspiration after reading thousands of books—it must have been extraordinarily wonderful.

How to Experience Suzhou Gardens from Multiple Perspectives
① Suzhou gardens perfectly create a profound and open atmosphere with ever-changing views as you move, through eight major landscaping techniques such as borrowing scenery and framing views, offering a magical experience where the small reveals the grand.
② Every time I visit Suzhou gardens, I am attracted by the various window frame designs in the garden; each window is like a painting, a world in itself, with sunlight and the full bloom of spring seemingly captured within.
③ I also like to observe some neglected corners, where moss climbs over the walls, resembling natural ink paintings; the wall serves as paper, the moss as ink, and bamboo completes the picture. The charm is so compelling that it makes one linger and forget to return.
④ The best way to immerse yourself in Suzhou gardens is to enjoy tea. Last weekend, I brought a set of high-aesthetic tea ware, a Tang Palace Tea Banquet gift set from Wanqiantang, which features the Tang dynasty trend of red and green contrast and precious patterns, very suitable for the garden setting; a combination of one pot and two cups with a plate, suitable for both personal use and gifting. Between the willows and pines, beside the pavilions and lakes, brewing a pot of tea and quietly enjoying the slow life is truly delightful.

Suzhou Couple's Garden Retreat—The only remaining academy garden in Suzhou
The Couple's Garden Retreat, also known as Jìnshānlín or Lèyuán, is a classical garden architecture that dates back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Located at Sanyuanfang in the south of Suzhou city (No. 708 Renmin Road), it is separated from the Canglang Pavilion by just one alley. The garden's entrance faces south, looking across the water at the Canglang Pavilion. During the Five Dynasties, it was part of the villa belonging to Sun Chengyou, the military governor of the Wu and Yue states in central Wu. After changing owners several times and suffering damage, it was rebuilt during the Guangxu period.
The entrance to the Couple's Garden Retreat faces the Canglang Pavilion, maintaining the layout of the late Qing Dynasty. The small West Lake pool and the entrance are on the same north-south central axis, with spacious architecture featuring the Xuegutang Hall, Haogeting Pavilion, Siluting Pavilion, and Gutin Pavilion. The walls of the corridors are inlaid with stone tablets inscribed with 'Records of the Couple's Garden' and 'Records of the Xuegutang Hall'. The pool is central, surrounded by winding corridors, clear water, and lush trees, creating a serene and spacious courtyard.

Iron Bone Red: The Number One Branch in the South of the Yangtze River | Ke Yuan (1573)
| Ke Yuan (1573). There is a garden in Suzhou with a history that predates the Humble Administrator's Garden by more than five hundred years. When spring arrives, the plum blossoms in the garden bloom, attracting countless tourists to bend over in admiration.
Ke Yuan, also known as Jinshanlin and Leyuan, is an ancient classical garden architecture that was established during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. It is only a lane away from the Canglang Pavilion, with garden gates facing each other across the water.
Now is the season when the plum blossoms in the south of the Yangtze River are in full bloom. Despite days of rain, nothing can stop the enthusiasm of the plum blossoms competing to bloom. Clusters of blooming plum blossoms set against pavilions and towers create an interesting contrast. Their graceful posture and subtle fragrance convey the vitality and hope of life, becoming the most beautiful scenery of the early spring garden.
Ke Yuan's Yiqing Hall and Xuegu Hall are the only academy gardens in Suzhou, with various elegant plants grown inside. According to historical records, Ke Yuan is famous for its plum blossoms, and in the past, there was an ancient plum called 'Iron Bone Red,' known as 'The Number One Branch in the South of the Yangtze River.' Today, plum blossoms are planted in front of Yiqing Hall and Xuegu Hall, with Chinese-style floral windows framing each branch of red plum, resembling a naturally formed traditional Chinese painting. Even before approaching, one can smell the faint fragrance.

Stop going to the Humble Administrator's Garden when you come to Suzhou! These gardens are less crowded and more beautiful
I go to Suzhou several times a year, and I always remember the countless encounters with those gardens. I have been to many gardens several times, but there is always a sense of freshness, which is irresistible. Among them, many gardens are not crowded even on weekends. Compared with the well-known gardens such as the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lion Grove, wandering in these gardens always gives people a leisurely and comfortable feeling. Sitting on the bluestone, watching the green water around the pavilion, listening to the willow waves and cicadas, tasting a pot of tea, letting time slow down, this is the way of life that should be on the weekend!

How to experience Suzhou gardens from multiple angles
①Suzhou gardens perfectly create a deep and far-reaching artistic conception that changes with every step through eight major landscaping techniques such as borrowing scenery and framing scenery, giving people a magical experience of seeing the big from the small.
②Every time I go to Suzhou gardens, I am always attracted by various window frame designs in the garden. It is simply a window, a painting, a world. The window frame seems to put in the sunshine, and also puts in the full garden of spring.
③I also like to observe some corners that no one cares about, watching moss climb all over the wall, like a natural ink painting, the wall is paper, moss is ink, and bamboo enters the painting. The charm is full and makes people linger.

The flowers in the garden have bloomed, waiting for you to come and appreciate them.
Kun Garden is located in Sanyuanfang, south of Suzhou City, just a lane away from Canglang Pavilion. After visiting Canglang Pavilion, don't forget to take a stroll inside Kun Garden. There are not many people inside, but the scenery surprised me. As soon as you enter, you see a blue water pool surrounded by weeping willows and corridors. The spring breeze brings a refreshing fragrance. Because there are few people, the scenic spot is particularly peaceful and comfortable. Walking in the courtyard, you can see the mottled tree shadows on the ground, hear the rustling sound of the bamboo forest, and various peonies. When accompanied by sunshine, the heart will also calm down, as if all the usual troubles have disappeared, and you only want to retreat to this peaceful place in the bustling city, feeling carefree.
