Beaches and shores
The Kanmon Strait connects Japan's Honshu Island and Kyushu Island. The southern shore of the strait is Shimon City in Fukuoka Prefecture, and the northern shore is Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, so it has the name "Kanmon Strait". The Guanmen Strait, formerly known as the Maguan Strait, was opened on November 14, 1973, across both sides of the strait. It is a special bridge for expressways. The natural landscape of the Kanmon Strait is unique and beautiful, and hundreds of ships gather here. The annual fireworks display is very grand, and tourists from all over the world will gather here. There are special tourist boats operating in the Tanghu Port and Moji Port areas of Shimonoseki City. The specific route is the Mon Strait Cruise Line, you can enjoy the boat trip to the fullest. The Guanmen Bridge is 1068 meters long and 61 meters above sea level. There will be 3 hours of lighting time a day. On the bridge, you can also enjoy the natural scenery of the strait. The more popular Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival is held in August every year. Fireworks will be released from the two venues of Shimonoseki and Mojigang. The fireworks will be accompanied by music. The floating boats on the strait will also launch fireworks. The huge fireworks launched by the strait amazed the audience, and more than one million people attended the scene.

A Day in Mojiko
Located at the northern tip of Kyushu, Mojiko was an important trading port in the early days. As a result, the retro area is home to many Western-style commercial buildings from the early 20th century. Even the Mojiko Station hall is decorated in a quaint and beautiful style.
The Mojiko Retro Area, which is right outside JR Mojiko Station, is a pleasant seaside area. Walking here feels like stepping into a different time and space. Key attractions include the Blue Wing pedestrian bridge that opens and closes at regular intervals, the Railway Museum, the Old Mitsui Club, the Former Moji Customs Building, and the Mojiko Observation Deck.
The Mojiko Observation Deck ticket costs 300 yen. Although the view from the deck is not as dazzling as that of a bustling metropolis, the ticket is cheap, and you can still enjoy a cup of coffee up there. If it's mealtime, you must try the baked curry. The charred cheese paired with the rich curry is especially delicious. It was so good that I even bought a curry pack to take home.
After visiting the retro area, a half-hour walk will take you to the Kanmon Bridge pedestrian underpass. The Kanmon Strait is the sea between Kyushu and Honshu. After crossing it, you will reach Shimonoseki in Honshu. Therefore, a 15-minute walk through the Kanmon Bridge pedestrian underpass allows you to experience the fun of traveling from Kyushu to Honshu. It's worth taking a stroll.
🕰️ Mojiko Observation Deck Hours: 10:00-22:00
(Last entry at 21:30)

Kyushu Tour - Kanmon Strait
I drove here on a whim. The scenery here is very beautiful, especially at dusk. If you have studied Japanese history, you should know Minamoto no Yoshitsune. You can see Dan-no-ura with the coast as the stage, the final place of the Genpei War (1185), when the Taira clan, the 8-year-old Emperor Antoku, his grandmother and two nuns all committed suicide by jumping into the sea, and the Taira clan has been extinct since then. Although there is a hint of sadness, the traces of history add another kind of beauty. You can come and see it if you have the chance.
