Kamikochi
Kamikochi is located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the western part of Nagano Prefecture. It is surrounded by the Hotaka Mountain Range, Mount Yake, and the Jonen Mountain Range. It is a small basin at an altitude of about 1500 meters and belongs to the Chubu Sangaku National Park. It became known to many mountaineering enthusiasts around the world through the introduction of the 19th-century British missionary and mountaineer Walter Weston.

📍Kamikochi (上高地)
Kamikochi in Nagano Prefecture is one of the most beautiful mountainous places in Japan. It offers breathtaking views through all seasons but it’s said to be the most beautiful in autumn and summer. I went there in summer and was very surprised by its beauty. The majestic mountain ranges seem to embrace the surrounding landscape, the clear water flowing on the Azusa River, the green forest, all create a wonderful picture of nature.
When traveling to Kamikochi I recommend you to:
1. Experience the spectacular views of the Hotaka Range peaks from Kappabashi Bridge. And if you come there in summer, try sitting by the Azusa river and touch the water, it’s surprisingly freezing.
2. Take a hike out to Myojin Pond
3. Go for a trekking adventure in the alpine wonderland of the Northern Japan Alps

This bridge is the "city center" of peaceful and tranquilat Kamikochi. 5mins walk from the bus terminal, several hotels along with restaurants, shops and snack counters are located at each side of the bridge.
Further down (same side of the bus terminal) you can find free public toilet if you dont feel like donating 100yen to use the toilet at the bus terminal. Another 5 mins further is the nice konashidaira campsite.
Great place with a nice view! We really had a nice time, even though we walked many km. I will totally come again in the future, if i have the chance.

Kappabashi is the center of Kamikochi, and around the Kappabashi bridge you can find amenities like a visitors center, small restaurants and hotels, and some shops. This hike covers mostly flat terrain and requires little to no hiking experience.
If you want to do hike you can go to the Myojin Pond and back to Kappabashi via a different trail. This will take an additional 3.5 hours, and it is very much worth the trek. Myojin Pond is another famous highlight in Kamikochi with a tranquil atmosphere, a small shrine, and pretty foliage in autumn.

Japan Alps trekking for beginners
Kamikochi is surprisingly accessible and relatively “low effort” for a tourist to enjoy the full majesty of nature. Taking the Alpico bus from Matsumoto Station to Taisho Pond takes about 1.5hr and you can start the leisurely trek upwards, or simply continue riding the bus all the way to Kamikochi bus terminal where it is bustling with food shop and the amazing view from the Kappa Bridge. Take note the route is usually closed from November for Winter.

Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery
Getting There - By bus from Tokyo
Alpico operates daytime and overnight highway buses between Tokyo (Tokyo Station, Shinjuku) and Kamikochi. The one way trip takes 5-7 hours and costs around 6000 to 8000 yen. Online reservations can be made through Willer.
There are also some tour packages during summer for this place from different Tour agents in Japan. I suggest that you would take tours from them although its a bit pricy but its convenient

Japan Alps: Kamikochi, Nagano Prefecture
Located in the birthplace of the Japanese Alps, Kamikochi offers breathtaking views and access to your next adventure.
The natural history of Kamikochi is one of great elemental upheavals occurring over many thousands of years, though some of these were also quite recent. The mountains and valleys were shaped in part by glacial activity, evidence of which can still be seen in some of the most prominent peaks. Another major player in the formation of the area was Mt. Yakedake, whose eruption over 14,000 years ago changed the course of the Azusa River, causing it to run through the basin in which present day Kamikochi and Matsumoto are located.
Mt. Yakedake would again play a role in shaping Kamikochi’s landscape when another eru#asia tion in the summer of 1915 dammed the Azusa River, creating Taisho Pond. It should be mentioned that Mt. Yakedake is the only active volcano in the Northern Alps and still proclaims its fury to the heavens by constantly emitting a plume of smoke.

Kamikochi is located on a great RuralJapan route between Matsumoto and Takayama City. If you are looking to get away from the big city and explore the road less traveled, Kamikochi and its surrounding areas have much to offer. #wintergetaway

Kamikochi: A Park in the Midst of the Japan Alps
Kamikochi is one of the most talked-about destinations in Japan in recent years. Why do people go there? Where is it located? Let's take a look at this review.
Kamikochi is located in the Nagano National Park, part of the Northern Japan Alps. It is naturally beautiful in every season. Last year, I went during the autumn foliage season, so this year I decided to go during the spring instead. The park is open from April 17 to November 15 every year (it is closed during winter when there are no vehicles running, and you have to walk in by yourself). The highlights include Taisho Pond and Kappa Bridge, both about 4 km in distance, walking along the Azusa River. On the other side is Myojin Pond, also 4 km away. If you plan to go for a walk, you should allow enough time and prepare appropriate clothing.

The Wonderful Kamikōchi Area
#japantrip Came here during late October and the foliage was spectacular. Every turn, every corner and every sight felt so lyrical and poetic. The river was turquoise and the Japanese larch trees were tinted in an autumnal golden yellow.
The only downside is it gets relatively crowded at Kappa Bridge later in the day. We were lucky that we hopped onto the earliest morning bus and had a peaceful time around Taisho pond before the crowd arrives.

A 12km hike feels like being in a fairyland
And then you arrive at Mishima Pond
Nagano Prefecture is a place where beautiful scenery is everywhere, and it feels like a fairyland everywhere,
The photos taken really don't convey the fairy-tale-like feeling of being there
Enjoy the fairyland, enjoy the present, enjoy every day

EP.2 Kamikochi (上高地): How to Get to Kamikochi
Today, I will share the ways to travel from the city of Matsumoto to Kamikochi. Since I stayed in Matsumoto for one night, there are two ways to get to Kamikochi.
1. Travel by bus from Matsumoto to Kamikochi (There are only two rounds, at 05:30 and 10:30 AM) in the year 2023.
2. Take a train and then a bus (I chose this method because it's a bit late).
I started my journey around 7 AM, taking the train at JR Matsumoto Station on the Kamikochi Line to Shin-shima shima Station, which takes about 30 minutes.
Upon arriving at Shin-shima shima Station, I bought a bus ticket to go up to Kamikochi National Park, which takes about an hour. Along the way, you will see dams and lush green nature, very beautiful.
For the return trip, just walk to the Kamikochi bus station to buy a ticket back to Shin-shima shima to return to Matsumoto.

Kamikochi has so much charm to amaze us in every season and will make you want to come back again.
Came here during early November and the foliage was spectacular. Every turn, every corner and every sight felt so lyrical and poetic. The river was turquoise and the Japanese larch trees were tinted in an autumn golden vibes.
It is a good forest for hiking. The view is very beautiful & the air is cool and fresh.
Better to spend a night and walk around to visit all spots. Family friendly place.
The only downside is it gets relatively crowded at Kappa Bridge later in the day.

Heavy-duty hiking | Autumn is the most beautiful season in Karasawa
I camped in Kamikochi for four days, and every day was sunny! Red leaves🍁, yellow leaves🍂, snow mountains🏔️, blue sky☀️, it's really beautiful!
The 5-day hiking route I personally think is very easy (although we are heavily equipped!) But there is plenty of time, you can have time to set up tents, cook, take pictures, and daze! Play very loosely~
Next time I want to summit the snow mountain, buy good equipment and train well before fighting again!

Golden moments in Kamikochi
The highlight of my 1 week trip to Japan is visiting Kamikochi (上高地). It is only open between mid-Apr to mid-Nov every year. You can easily reach here by taking bus or train from Matsumoto.
This is definitely one of the best place to enjoying a nice hike in nature, admiring the autumn leaves and breathing in fresh mountain air. You can choose between several well crafted routes (flat terrains) which may take you between 2-4 hours. The temp in Oct was very cooling at 15-19 degrees and I even had an ice cream at my half way point. 😀
Highly recommend to add this to your Japan itinerary if you visit during autumn.

Kamikochi in Autumn Nature's Masterpiece
#fallingseason Kamikochi, in the heart of Japan's Northern Alps
🍁 Vibrant Foliage: The lush green landscapes of summer transform into a breathtaking canvas of red, orange, and gold. The vibrant foliage creates a mesmerizing contrast with the crystal-clear Azusa River.
🏞️ Tranquil Hikes: Autumn is the perfect time for peaceful hikes along the well-maintained trails. The cool, crisp air and the soothing sound of the river make every step a delight.
🏔️ Iconic Peaks: Kamikochi is framed by iconic peaks like Mt. Hotaka and Mt. Yake. The autumn backdrop adds an extra layer of grandeur to these towering mountains.
In October the leaves is not change color yet. If you want to see full leaves color-change, better come on November. But the weather on this month is really perfect.
Japanese people come here to escape the summer ☺️ It feels like Studio Ghibli |||
I went to the highlands last autumn.
Shirakawago is located in Nagano Prefecture, a summer resort popular among many Japanese people.
In my travel company, we also offer tours to the highlands, which sell well.
You can take a bus or train from Tokyo.
I recommend taking the tram over, so you won't waste time and can also explore more in the highland.
There are indeed many foreigners, but not as many as Tokyo haha.

Hiking is one of the most popular weekend pastimes for people who live in Japan. This is no wonder, as 70% of the country consists of mountainous areas, which means that Japan is dotted with amazing hiking opportunities.
Note: Kamikochi is open from mid/late April until November 15 and shuts down during winter. In 2021, Kamikochi is scheduled to be open from April 17 to November 15.
By public transportation: one of the easiest ways to get to Kamikochi from Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto is by taking a direct bus. A one way trip from Tokyo takes 5-7 hours and costs ¥6,000 ~ ¥10,000. You cna board the bus to Kamikochi at several places in Tokyo, including Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Staion. Online reservations are recommended, especially in the summer holidays and in the koyo season.

The Upper Highlands is a tourist attraction in the upper reaches of the Sagawa River in the western part of the Nagano Mountains in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is about 1,500 meters above sea level and is under the jurisdiction of Matsumoto City. There are not only a lot of cultural scenes, but also a series of beautiful natural scenery including Dazhengchi, Tiandaichi, Deze, etc. It is a special place of special design and a special natural monument designated by Japan.
Upper Highlands is a central part of the Mountain National Park in central Japan. It was introduced to the people of the world by the British missionary Walter Weston during the Meiji era and has since become one of the most representative mountain resorts in Japan. . Here, the deciduous broad-leaved forest and the alpine coniferous forest are mixed with each other, and the vegetation is lush. There are also willow trees on the edge of the river. The spring and summer seasons are graceful and beautiful. There are many wild ducks in the rivers of Suichuan and Dazheng. These wild ducks do not migrate and are not alert to humans, so visitors can observe their embarrassment in the water.
