Located in the fishing village harbor of Nachikatsuura, this port is Japan's number one in tuna production, which is truly special. Here, you can enjoy tuna-related delicacies at a very cost-effective price, including sashimi, rice bowls, sushi, and more. There aren't many shops inside, so you have to order and pay using a machine, then take a ticket to the shop to collect your food.

Located in the mountains, it is considered the most expansive and beautiful shrine among the Kumano Sanzan, but correspondingly, it has the most challenging access. For those without a car, the journey begins with a walk from the bus stop. If you have a car, you can park closer, and the walk is fairly moderate. The most famous photo spot here is the three-story pagoda at the back. From the platform, you can capture both the pagoda and the waterfall, which are incredibly beautiful and spectacular. The whole trip takes about 45 minutes to an hour, not including the climb. There are mainly two shrines, one red and one wooden, giving the impression of one being new and the other old. Additionally, there's a large tree hollow nearby that you can pass through for blessings of safety, which is quite interesting.

Located at the fishing port with Japan's highest tuna yield, there stands a hotel that appears to be on a small island across the way. In reality, it is accessible by a connecting road, which is somewhat difficult to navigate and has limited parking space. There's a dedicated parking lot nearby in the town, complete with a regular shuttle bus service, making it very convenient. It's recommended to experience the hotel's 'turtle boat' on the way there, just like the tale of Urashima Taro, which is super cool. For those driving, you can take the bus back to the parking lot. The hotel is mainly divided into three buildings, some facing the Pacific Ocean, some overlooking the fishing port, and others situated in the high mountain area with high floors and a large area. Just walking around the hotel can be tiring. Wheelchairs are also available for those in need, which is very considerate. We stayed in the Sunrise Pavilion with a view of the Pacific Ocean, where the sunrise is incredibly beautiful when the weather is good. It's also recommended to visit the mountain behind the hotel, where you can take a super long escalator (often half-closed) or an elevator to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The hotel has four main bathing areas, two of which are built into caves, which is super cool, and you can even hear the sound of the waves. The hotel also has restaurants and a convenience store, which is not open 24 hours, so plan your shopping accordingly.

Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine can be reached by bus from both Kii-Katsuura Station and Nachi Station. The hike up the Daimon-zaka was amazing, the air is so fresh and you can feel the beauty of Mother Nature. It is so peaceful and serene. I wish that I can travel to more unique and peaceful places in Japan! 😊

Continuing down the stairs, you finally reach the three-story pagoda. The view of Nachi Falls from this spot is amazing. The combination of the tall red tower and the waterfall flowing from the distant forest is rich in composition and harmonious. It is a wonderful view on both sunny and rainy days. Continuing down the stairs, old large trees stand on both sides, and finally arriving at the foot of the mountain, the entrance to Nachi Falls is right in front of you. Nachi Falls is the highest waterfall in Japan, with a drop of 133 meters. The Shinto Nachi Taisha Shrine was built to commemorate the spirit of this waterfall and is one of the three most famous shrines on the Kii Peninsula. In addition, below Nachi Falls is Hiryu Shrine, where you can view the waterfall up close. |Healed by a "Mom" Hotel. I have always had a thing for seaside hotels, so even after reading a lot of complaints, I still firmly chose Urashima. After staying for two days, I was healed by the motherly warmth that the hotel exudes from the inside out. The outdated facilities are a common complaint among many netizens, but personally, I find them completely acceptable. The TV in the room is only the size of an iPad, the corridors are filled with a faint bamboo scent, and the hot spring pools are lined with old-fashioned tiles... The sense of age that permeates every detail is actually quite comforting. As a hotel that is older than my mom, it still has all the modern amenities, including an izakaya, ramen shop, Lawson, and souvenir supermarket. The hotel staff are all very friendly, but not many of them speak English, and most can only speak a few words. There is no Chinese service, so communication can be a bit difficult for non-standard matters. Urashima has a total of four hot spring pools, with the Genbudo and Bokido natural cave hot springs being the highlights. Kiikatsuura is a small town by the sea, surrounded by mountains and the sea. It is an important post station on the Kumano Kodo, a World Cultural Heritage site, and has the largest tuna market. On Mount Nachi, the rugged Kumano Kodo still retains the atmosphere of the Heian period, witnessing the vicissitudes and changes of history, and every stone tells a story of the past. Nachi Falls cascades down from the lush mountains, with a height difference of 133 meters, and is known as the "largest waterfall in Japan." Although it is not as majestic and spectacular as those in China, it is a cultural symbol. Since ancient times, this has been a place of practice for Buddhism and Shintoism. According to legend, Nachi Falls is the sacred body of the Hiryu Shrine, a separate shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha. Every year on July 9 and December 27, a grand ceremony is held to replace the sacred rope that is enshrined above the waterfall. This tradition, which has been passed down for hundreds of years, has become a unique cultural symbol of Nachi Falls. Seiganto-ji, a Buddhist temple, is the oldest building in the Kumano region, standing side by side with the Shinto Nachi Taisha, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of Buddhism and Shintoism. Urashima Hotel is a large resort with one hotel on one island, and its characteristic is that you can arrive at the hotel by taking a cute turtle boat. We chose an economical Japanese-style room in the main building. Sitting in front of the large floor-to-ceiling windows, we could see the busy turtle boats and people fishing in the sea. The most expensive mountain hotel is equivalent to the 32nd floor above ground and requires taking a 154-meter-long escalator to reach it. It is also the first time to take this kind of mountain elevator in a hotel. The Langyan Trail on the lower level of the Yamagami Pavilion is also worth a visit. It is a great place to watch the sunrise and sunset, and there is also a small shrine. The hotel’s specialty is the cave hot springs, and you will receive free bathing powder if you check in three or more times. My son went to all four hot springs in one night. He said that No. 2 and No. 4 are inner hot springs because they are humid and have bugs. We went to No. 1 and No. 3, and we were able to watch the Pacific Ocean waves crashing while taking a bath, especially the Wanggui Cave. Since men and women took turns, we had to go there once in the morning and once in the afternoon. The cave on one side is larger than the other, and taking a shower in the cave feels like being in the wilderness to survive. There are pools on both sides with sea views. You can soak in them and watch the waves hitting the rocks, hoping that the waves will get bigger and bigger. The pool facing the waves in Xuanwudong is smaller, but the water is more yellow and has a stronger smell, which should be better for the skin. Anyway, my skin feels smooth after soaking. Worried that there would be nothing to eat on the island, I chose a set meal that included two meals. Apart from the fresh sashimi, everything else was pretty standard. I looked at a few small restaurants in the hotel and found that the prices were actually acceptable. There is also a restaurant that serves breakfast, and there is also a large Lawson convenience store. I heard that Tuna Market also has breakfast, I will choose Su Bo next time.

I wouldn't recommend to come to the place now as well as it's quite remote, and takes 4h by train from Osaka and 25 min by bus kii-katsura station. The view that spreads out straight ahead after descending the stone steps from the torii gate is amazing, and I felt like I was getting the power of nature while looking at the majestic waterfall in the middle of nature, as if I had wandered into a Ghibli forest. #japantrip Last year, i explored the kumano kodo pilgrimage route. It has been designated as a UNESCO heritage site and is fairly famous. For those unaware, basically this is a network of pilgrimage routes spread to Yoshino, Omine, Kumano Sanzan, and Koyasan. These pilgrimage routes connect not only to each other, therby giving you plenty to explore along the way. However, they also connect you to the ancient capitals of Japan, Nara, and Kyoto. And among the five different routes that it offers, the Nakahechi Route is the most popular one with travellers. For that route the starting point is Tanabe City.
