World flavors, spiral staircases and jazz nostalgia at Kafe, Ubud.
Even from the outside, the searching traveler would know that a place with a name like this - minimal, unlikely and kitsch - the word 'cafe' spelled with a 'k' would be unique in its genre. The façade is a homely outdoors seating area, reminiscent of the l front yard of an Italian, perhaps Tuscan, house, with trailing plants around, and a spiral staircase leading to the second and third floors. Located in on Jl. Hanoman, which is quite a central location in Ubud, it is quite obvious why it seems to be favored by the yoga community - plush and comfy cushions everywhere for that relaxing post-yoga breakfast sessions, and a menu filled with nutritious delicacies, and creative concoctions for specials, featuring organic local and international ingredients. There is also an organic and locally produced goods corner, for those who are looking for something to take home - packaged foods like honey, chips, coconut oil, and cookies, and non-edibles such as Bali souvenir mugs, tiny salt and pepper containers and wooden plates. And also much like other yoga hangouts, it has a noticeboard filled with flyers and posters for interesting events such as healing sessions, and kirtans, as well as the Yoga Barn schedule.
Kafe itself has a yoga studio space on the third floor, tastefully adorned with a polygonal disco ball, a serendipitous attribute for a cafe. On the second floor, the vibe leans more towards a quaint jazz cafe, soft music playing in the background, and walls decorated with portraits, and a balcony overlooking the street. After all, Kafe is pretty well-known in Ubud, for its live music, poetry, spoken word and open mic sessions, making it a charming, reputable and community-friendly establishment in the neighborhood.
