Tiger Mountain Great Wall
#falltrip
The Great Wall of China extends over a vast stretch of the country, and a section of the Great Wall can be found in Dandong, a city located in Liaoning Province in northeastern China. The section of the Great Wall in Dandong is known as the "Hushan Great Wall" or "Tiger Mountain Great Wall." It's perched on Hushan Mountain, which offers panoramic views of the Yalu River and North Korea, which is just across the Yalu River's waters.
The Hushan Great Wall is an important part of China's historical defense system. It dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and served as a strategic fortification along the northern border to defend against invasions.
Dandong itself is known for its cultural and historical attractions, including the Yalu River Broken Bridge, which was bombed during the Korean War, and the Friendship Bridge, a symbol of the connection between China and North Korea. But more about that in another post.

A glimpse of North Korea from China
Dandong, Liaoning is the main border crossing between China and North Korea.
A popular attraction is the broken bridge, bombed on the Korean side by the United States during the Korean War. You can walk to the end of what's left and gaze across to Sinujiu in the Hermit Kingdom. A river cruise is another way to get a good view of the Korean side.
Dandong was also the end of the Great Wall of China during the Ming Dynasty. The heavily restored wall is another excellent place to look into Korea, as it's close to the modern border.
Though the border is currently closed due to Covid, organized tours of North Korea ordinarily leave from Dandong, including day tours of Sinujiu and train journeys to Pyongyang.

Hushan Great Wall.
Most people used to think that the eastern end of the Great Wall was at the Old Dragon's Head in Shanhaiguan, but in fact, that section of the Great Wall is only the place where the Great Wall enters the sea. The real starting point of the Great Wall is the Hushan Great Wall on the Yalu River on the Sino-North Korean border. According to historical records, the Hushan Great Wall was built in the fifth year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty, that is, 1469, and was built by Han Bin, the deputy general soldier of Liaodong at that time. The military facilities of the Hushan Great Wall mainly include walls, wall platforms, enemy platforms, horse faces, beacon towers, moats, horse-blocking walls, etc. These facilities constitute a relatively complete defense system.
The Hushan Great Wall is named after Hushan. Hushan is a solitary mountain that rises on the Yalu River. It was called Huer Mountain in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and it was called Hushan in modern times. In history, the Hushan Great Wall was also called the Liaodong Border Wall, which was built to prevent the invasion of the Jianzhou Jurchens and protect the safety of the northeast border.

The tenacity of the Chinese nation is fully demonstrated on the Hushan Great Wall.
Passionately climbing, stepping on the soil of Dandong, the heartbeat resonates with the stone steps of the Hushan Great Wall. Every step forward is not only a distance, but also a leap of passion and dreams. The sun is shining, the ancient bricks are mottled, as if history is whispering in the ear. Here, I stepped over the Great Wall and crossed the boundary of time, feeling the unyielding passion and tenacity of the Chinese nation. At the top of Hushan, the pride is overwhelming, at this moment, I only wish to share this passion with you!
The Hushan Great Wall was built in the Ming Dynasty. The Hushan Great Wall on the Yalu River is different from Mutianyu Badaling. The Hushan Great Wall is full of ivy, many trees and many shades. Although there is little exposure to the sun, some places have high steps and steep slopes.
The Hushan Great Wall in Dandong is the eastern starting point of the Great Wall. It is famous for its "danger". The nearly 90-degree vertical stairs are just scary to look at. It faces the ancient city of Yizhou in North Korea across the river, and the view from the top of the mountain is superb!
It doesn't take long to climb the Hushan Great Wall, at most two hours. The Great Wall has nine enemy buildings. Most tourists visit from large to small, and the direction of the group tour is the opposite.

Catch A Glimpse of North Korea from the Great Wall of China 🇨🇳
Visiting the Hushan Great Wall in Dandong was an unforgettable experience. As I climbed the steep steps of the easternmost section of the Great Wall, the views grew more breathtaking with each step. The wall seemed to stretch endlessly along the rugged mountains, offering a deep sense of history and isolation. Reaching the top, I gazed out over the Yalu River and caught a glimpse of North Korea in the distance. It was surreal to see the quiet landscape just across the border. The contrast between the two sides was striking, and it made me appreciate the unique position of the Hushan Great Wall as both a historic site and a modern-day boundary. The sense of awe and contemplation stayed with me long after I descended.

The eastern starting point of the Great Wall, Hushan Great Wall
Dandong Hushan Great Wall is located to the east of Dandong City, Liaoning Province, on the banks of the Yalu River, which borders China and North Korea. It is the easternmost starting point of China's Great Wall and an important scenic area of the Yalu River as well as a national key cultural relic for protection.
The Hushan Great Wall was originally built in the fifth year of the Ming Dynasty, supervised by Han Bin, the deputy commander of Liaodong at that time. The Hushan Great Wall we see today has been rebuilt on the original site. Although it is a reconstruction, the trajectory of the wall and the positions of the enemy towers are consistent with history.
The geographical environment of the Hushan Great Wall is superior. Originally named Ma'ershan, it was renamed Hushan because the two side-by-side towering peaks resemble the erect ears of a tiger, also known as Tiger Ear Mountain. Hushan stands alone on the plain with a broad view. From here, we can see North Korea across the river, with its fields and houses clearly visible. Climbing the Great Wall to enjoy the scenery and the breeze is very pleasant.

The Hushan Great Wall in Dandong | The starting point of the eastern end of the Great Wall
The starting point of the eastern end of the Great Wall. The Great Wall starts from Shanhaiguan in the east and stretches to Jiayuguan in the west. However, the actual eastern starting point of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall is at the summit of Hushan in Dandong, Liaoning. It is located on the banks of the Yalu River, perched atop Hushan, turning northward and then westward. From there, the Great Wall winds through mountains and ridges, crosses deserts, and leaps over the Gobi, reaching all the way to Jiayuguan.
Over 30 years ago, archaeologists discovered the remains of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall at the summit of Hushan in Dandong, Liaoning. According to archaeological excavations and verifications, it was originally built in the fifth year of the Chenghua reign of Emperor Xianzong of the Ming Dynasty, in 1469 AD, to prevent the Jurchen tribes from moving southward. The Hushan Great Wall was constructed with its starting point on the western bank of the Yalu River, extending westward to connect with the Shanhaiguan Great Wall. Historical records also mention: 'During the end of the Ming Dynasty, border defense was of utmost importance, starting from the Yalu River in the east and reaching Jiayuguan in the west.'

The Hushan Great Wall in Dandong
The Hushan Great Wall in Dandong is a section that stretches across the mountainous terrain in northern China, resembling a giant dragon. It was initially built in the fifth year of the Ming Dynasty's Chenghua period, constructed by the Ming government to defend against the incursions of the Jianzhou Jurchens. The final stretch is extremely steep, and to fully witness the magnificent Great Wall, one must climb to the top by tightly gripping the iron chains with both hands. Standing atop the Great Wall, one can gaze upon the beautiful landscapes of both Dandong and North Korea.

Liaoning | The starting point of the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall - Hushan Great Wall
❤Recommended reason:
People have always believed that Shanhaiguan is the starting point of the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall, and the Liaodong Great Wall has been obliterated for hundreds of years. Archaeological discoveries finally confirmed that the starting point of the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall is Hushan on the bank of the Yalu River in Dandong, Liaoning, which corrects the claim that Shanhaiguan is the starting point of the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall. The Hushan Great Wall site is the starting point of the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall.
👍Most recommended:
The Hushan Great Wall was built in the fifth year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty (the park was built in 1467). The Hushan Great Wall faces North Korea across the river and is the best place to view the border scenery of China and North Korea.
🌟Highlights:
Among them, 'One Step Across' is only a dozen meters away from North Korea across the river, and it can be said that you can cross it in one step.

Mesmerized by Hushan Great Wall of China
Hushan Great Wall is just a 30-40-minute ride (using DiDi) from the Yalu Broken Bridge.
I went to Hushan Great Wall during summer, so I highly recommend wearing white and bring at least two bottles of water. There is a vendo machine few steps after you reach the top. There is a comfort room before reaching the top.
I bought two tickets, 60rmb for the entrance and 10rmb for the battery car. I also recommend riding a battery car for the back-and-forth ride going to the foot of the Great Wall and back to the entrance.
During the hike, remember to take photo of the map, enjoy beauty for every tower you've reached. North Korea is visible especially upon reaching the peak of the Great Wall.
Once you've reach the end of the hike, do not forget to go to the China-DPRK Border. If you are hungry after a hike, there is also a small restaurant before you reach the China-DPRK Border.

The Hushan Great Wall is the starting point of the eastern end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty. You can see the Yalu River and the opposite North Korea on the highest point of the beacon tower. The mysterious closed North Korean life has always been very curious, but I heard that these houses that we see with the naked eye are the most glamorous and beautiful show to outsiders.
