Sun Island Scenic Area is the second biggest venue of the annual Harbin Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival and it is best known as the snow sculpture display and competition area. I spent my late afternoon in there on the 23rd of January 2020. These 3-D images were gigantic. In 2007, one measuring 250 meters in length became the world record holder for the biggest snow sculpture. The snow sculptures were made from compacted snow so that they can preserve their form and bear weight. I visited Sun Island early this morning and it didn’t get crowded until 10am, so if you want pictures without people in the background I suggest you go early. I found these sculptures to be beautiful and I was impressed how much talented the artists are able to demonstrate just using snow. Most of the large sculptures have been completed in the last two weeks. There are still sculptures being created and it’s interesting to watch. Sun Island is said to be crowded with about 3 million people every year. In winter, the "Ice and Snow World", one of the world's three largest snow festivals, is held. Also, the Songhua River that flows beside Sun Island freezes over in winter. You'll want to be prepared for the cold and enjoy sightseeing in Harbin in winter. Here are five main features of the island. -Tourist attraction grade 5A (highest rank) -You can cross the Songhua River by ropeway -Lined with skewered meat stalls -Relatively clean toilets -There is a park lined with Russian-style houses Take the subway from the center of Harbin to near Sun Island. You can explore the island on foot from the station. I get the impression that there are a few toilets. After exploring the island, I recommend taking the ropeway over the large river and returning to the city! I'll never forget the feeling of approaching the city of Harbin from the sky.
