I watch American NBA basketball games all day, and today I learned that the inventor of basketball was not an American, but a Canadian. He was James Naismith, born in 1861 in the small town of Almonte, Canada.
In 1891, Naismith was inspired by the local children's game "Duck-on-a-Rock," where they liked to throw a ball into a peach basket (peach baskets were common in households as the area was rich in peaches), and invented "basketball" (officially named "basketball" in 1921). He wrote the original 13 rules of basketball, 12 of which are still in use today.
After the invention of basketball, it quickly became a popular men's sport in the United States and Canada, leading to the NBA we love today. The inventor of basketball, Naismith, is also known as the "Father of Basketball" and was awarded the honorary president of the International Basketball Federation. The NBA's Basketball Hall of Fame is also named after Naismith (Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame).
