Deception Island (Deception Island), in the South Shetland Islands, off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Located at 62°58′37″ south latitude and 60°39′00″ west longitude, it is a sunken volcano with a crater about 16 kilometers (10 miles) in diameter, a circular shape, and a diameter of about 12 kilometers (7 miles). It is 14.4 kilometers long, 12.2 kilometers wide, and covers an area of 136.9 square kilometers. The peak on the east side, at 542 m (1778 ft) above sea level, covers more than half of the island with glaciers. The crater at the center of the island, formed after a volcanic eruption in 1970, has been submerged by sea water, creating a large bay called Port Foster, about 9 kilometers (5.5 mi) long and 6 kilometers (3.6 mi) wide. The mountain pass is about 16 kilometers in diameter. The bay has a narrow entrance and is only 230 m (754 ft) wide, making it an excellent anchorage. British navy captain Henry Foster surveying Deception Island in 1829. In 1906, the Norwegian and Chilean whaling companies began to build blubber processing plants in Veles Bay on the island. Since 1910, it has been the central port for entering the British polar regions, and since 1967, successive volcanic eruptions and earthquakes have occurred.
