Eihei-ji Temple is located in Eihei-ji-cho, Yoshida-gun, Fukui Prefecture. It is the main temple of the Soto Zen sect, known as "Kushi-san." It was founded in 1244 by Dogen Zenji as a center for the practice of zazen. Dogen Zenji was born in Kyoto in 1200 and became a monk on Mount Hiei at the age of 14. In the spring of his 24th year, he traveled to Mount Tendo in China to study under Master Nyojo, inheriting the Buddhist teachings of "zazen" (sitting meditation) from Sakyamuni Buddha and returning to Japan. The temple was built according to the style of Mingzhou Zen temples from the Song Dynasty, displaying a typical layout of Zen temples. The ancient temple remains well-preserved, with its simple wooden architecture. The central focus of practice here is zazen, but zazen is not the only aspect. It is important to integrate the spirit of zazen into daily life. For example, the monks' daily work of wiping the corridors with cloths is a form of "dynamic zazen." The brochure has pictures of monks wiping the floor, just like Ikkyu in the cartoon. Visitors interested in praying or learning about Zen meditation may want to take a look.
