Chongming Academy
Chongming, named after the town, has been continuous since the establishment of the town in the Tang Dynasty. It serves as a key port to the west of the island, connecting the mainland, hence the administrative center is set here, named Chengqiao.
Since the flourishing of education, an academy was established to the east of Chengqiao, known as Chongming County School, where Confucius was worshipped in the Wen Temple, promoting education throughout the island. Today, the academy has been converted into a museum for the public's enjoyment.
The academy faces south with its back to the north, with archways on the east and west. Entering from the west archway, you will see the Lingxing Gate, and beyond the gate is the Pan Pool, a small fishless pond, with the Deyun Bridge above it. To the left and right are the east and west official halls, the doors are locked for unknown reasons.
Beyond the bridge is the Ji Gate, with stone steles on both sides. After entering the gate, there is a shrine to local worthies on the right and a shrine to famous officials on the left. The two shrines display items related to the evolution of Chongming, showing the past and present of the island.
The Ji Gate faces the Dacheng Hall, where Confucius is worshipped, and there are east and west side halls. Behind the hall are the Zunjing Pavilion and the Chongsheng Shrine, which are the key parts of the academy.
Looking east from the Lingxing Gate, there is a large gate staggered with it, which is the county school. Behind the gate is the Yi Gate, which is level with the Ji Gate, and behind it is the Minglun Hall, where Confucian scholars used to study.
Looking west from the Ji Gate, there are shrines to loyalty, filial piety, brotherhood and propriety, and shrines to two Tang officials, Zhao. Behind them is the Yingzhou Academy, which is also closed.
Chongming, originally a sandbar in the sea, has gradually become inhabited over time. Since being incorporated into the Central Plains, it has promoted civilization and education, and is now a green oasis in the sea, a shield for Shanghai, and a permanent garrison in the East China Sea.
