#hellohalloween The Canal du Midi is one of the most beautiful and historic waterways in France, stretching over 240 kilometers from Toulouse to the Mediterranean Sea. Built in the 17th century, it is a masterpiece of engineering and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canal flows through peaceful countryside, vineyards, and charming villages, shaded by long rows of plane trees that reflect in the calm water. Visitors love walking, cycling, or cruising on small boats along the canal, enjoying its slow rhythm and scenic views. Along the way, there are lovely stone bridges, old locks, and quiet harbors where travelers can stop to explore local food, wine, and culture. Many say the Canal du Midi offers a feeling of peace and nostalgia, connecting people with nature and history. Whether you travel by boat or on foot, it’s a magical journey through the heart of southern France, full of charm, sunlight, and tranquility.

#myitinerary If you are holidaying or headed to the south part of France. It is very likely you will stop by the pink City. Toulouse is an absolute gem. However, under rated it has something for everyone. While, many times two days are plenty to check out sights of Toulouse. On a recent holiday i stayed in Toulouse for 4 nights and it was the most balanced number of days. When i recommend 4 nights, it includes 2 seperate day trips to Carcassonne and Albi. Here is what the trip looked like :- Day 1 - This was a day with perfect autumn weather. And i always like to orient myself with a city on foot. The day included some of the most famous sights of Toulouse. Starting with Place du Capitol, the stunning, Basilica of Saint-Sernin, the shops and walking around Ru du taur and the Japanese garden. Each day the evening was more about leisure and dedicated to food experiences which may differ for everyone. Day 2 - This would be a lovely day to get started with one of my most favourite things about Toulouse. The canal du midi, a canal that stretches almost 200kms plus and offers scenic boat rides. i recommend getting an hour or two long boat tour. This will give you an idea of what sort of sights let along the canal. In your remaining days in toulouse. You can use the evening leisure hours to come back to your favourite spots. On foot or bicycle but rest assured you will have several spots. After the boat tour you can head to one of the places for a stroll. Day 3 - This should be a day trip to Carcassonne. This is an absolutely gorgeous city with so much to do. It depends on if you take one of those day tours on the bus or get a train in the morning. You are looking forward to a spectacular day. Right from the medieval city to Chateau comtal and ramparts, sait nazzaire basilique, the school.musuem, the old bridge and so much more. Day 4 - Once again you want an early start. A day tour from Toulouse on a bus would simplify things greatly otherwise a cheap train ride will take an hour each way. But worth it because Albi is a beautiful medieval gem too with the cathedral and the lovely little museum. A personal favourite of mine in Albi is the riverside path. #familytravel While the canal du midi works for anyone and everyone. It particularly works well for a family holiday as it offers a bunch of side gigs and makes for a very satisfying activity. This is an inland waterway that is mainly used for tourism purposes now. It offers the most spectacular views of this region. The vibe is something else. We did it multiple times. Once as a boat tour. Which is highly recommended. And then when you fall in love with the canal, you can further explore your favourite parts on foot or even better on a bicycle. While on the boat tour of canal du midi, there were various time options. We picked 2 hours. And that was superb. The canal tour passes by some of the most charming scenery. From a vineyard, to the port of trebes, rode bridge, puicheric, la redorte and so much more that i can't seem to recollect name wise. #citydaytours During my time in Toulouse and nearby day trips like Albi and Carcassonne. My favourite thing was Canal du midi. This gorgeous canal passes by both Toulouse and Carcassone. With over 240 kms long, this canal passes by some spectacular locations that make for great sightseeing spots and activities. Here I have put together a day tour plan which focuses purely on the best exploits around the canal du midi. Starting with a heritage walk that begins from the tourist center in Toulouse. You will pass by several points like the rode bridge, the tripple lock staircase all the way to Trebes. Here you have several restaurants and shops. A bike path to chose between 13 kms to carcassonne or 10 kms to Marseillete. On the path you will come across the Anguilla lock and several wooden characters. The path will pass by rice farms, vineyards and apple orchards as we reach the marseillete lake. A few minutes later as we reach the 13 km carcassonne point. There is a port that offers boat tours. This is a 2 hour long guided tour that will orient you with most beautiful of scenery. Upon return we're headed towards minervois, where we see the argent double spillway bridge. To grab a bite we take a break in homps. The lake side setting even gives the option of swimming and relaxing. Maison des vins du mervois has interesting items for those with the shopping intent.
