Phanom Rung Castle, Buriram Province
Phanom Rung Castle is an ancient site located on Phanom Rung Mountain in Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Buriram Province. It was built in the style of ancient Khmer art, which is one of the most beautiful. The beauty and grandeur of this castle can be seen in the form of architecture. The carving of the pattern, the selection of the location on the mountaintop, has an axial plan with various building elements arranged in a straight line pointing towards the center, which is the main castle. From this grand construction work, it is very curious and amazed that how the ancient people built this castle. Phanom Rung Castle is well known to the locals. There is a local tale called "Indraprastha" which tells of a couple who wandered until they found shelter in a beautiful and deserted stone castle in the middle of the forest. But for outsiders from other countries, The first known document mentioning Phanom Rung Castle was the memoirs of a Frenchman named Etienne Aymonier in 1885, published as an article in 1902. In 1906, His Royal Highness Prince Damrong Rajanubhab visited Phanom Rung Castle. During the visit to the Isaan region and again in 1929, the Fine Arts Department announced the registration of Phanom Rung Castle as a national ancient site, announced in the Royal Gazette, Volume 52, Part 75, March 8, 1935.
And in 1960-1961, the exploration of Phanom Rung Castle was carried out again. Later in 1971, the restoration of Phanom Rung Castle began using the anastylosis method (Anastylosis is the process of returning parts of the castle to their original positions).
