Historic buildings
Bremen's central square is centered on a medieval complex of buildings. On the north side of the square stands the more than 600-year-old town hall, with a Gothic facade blended with Renaissance decorations, and well-preserved murals and wood carvings inside. The 8.5-meter-high Roland statue in front of it symbolizes the freedom of the city and is one of the most representative statues of its kind in Europe. On the west side of the square is St. Peterli Cathedral, where the twin tower spires contrast sharply with the bronze dome, and carillon performances are held every week to attract tourists to stop. The Sting Hotel on the east side is now the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce, and its Renaissance-style gables and golden reliefs highlight its historical heritage. The town hall and the Roland statue in the center of Bremen were listed as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2014. The square covers an area of about 3,484 square meters. Now, except for the Christmas market and the flea market at the end of October, Bremen's central square is no longer used as a market.
