3 days trip in Vang Vieng, Laos

After a 9-hour journey, I arrived in Vang Vieng, where I spent 3 nights and explored the town over 2 full days. It’s a laid-back, hippie-style town with plenty of activities — you can even take a hot air balloon ride. There are many hiking trails and around 7–9 lagoons in the area. I visited Lagoons 1, 2, 3, and 4 where you can swim or just relax and sunbathe.
I rented a motorbike from my hostel for 180,000 kip/day, while a friend rented one from outside for 170,000 kip.
Lagoons:
Lagoon 1: The most crowded one, especially with Korean tourists — likely due to a 2014 Korean travel show that featured it along with the nearby Sakura Bar. Mostly middle-aged tour groups. There's also a cave above the lagoon you can explore (around 200m in).
Lagoon 2: Loses sunlight after 11:20 AM, so plan your visit earlier if you want to swim.
Lagoon 3: Sun disappears around 11:30 AM. It has a younger, livelier crowd. There’s a cave here too — although the entrance looks narrow, it’s easy to navigate inside.
Lagoon 4: A 30-minute motorbike ride away. Quiet, sunny all day, and not crowded. Near here is the Loup Cave, worth visiting if you have extra time.
Tham Nam (Water Cave):
One of the most unique cave experiences I had. You float inside the cave on a tube for around 300 meters. Near the end, the water actually starts to feel warmer.
Viewpoints:
Vang Vieng is full of scenic viewpoints. I climbed two mountains and visited three viewpoints in total, but there are 4–5 options around the town.
Nam Xay Viewpoint: The most famous one. Many people go here to take photos with motorbikes at the top — sometimes you may have to wait in line for a picture.
Phapoungkham Cave & Viewpoint: There are two viewpoints and one cave here. Be sure to bring a flashlight for any cave visits.
Elevate 9: Perfect for watching sunset and hot air balloons. Surprisingly affordable despite its great view.
Bars & Nightlife:
Sakura Bar: The biggest and most popular — especially with Korean tourists.
Irish Bar and Full Moon Bar are also lively spots worth checking out.
Transportation:
I traveled from Vang Vieng to Vientiane in 1.5 hours by minivan. The train takes even less — around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Unlike the rough roads in northern Laos, this route is a proper highway, so vehicles move fast. The minivan picked me up directly from my hostel and cost 140,000 kip.

Anyone visiting Vang Vieng must not miss Blue Lagoon 2, a natural attraction featuring an emerald-green pool in a spacious area on the mountainside. Food is available for purchase at the front, and you can order and eat inside. There are several shaded pavilions, perfect for bringing children to play in the water. There are both shallow and deep areas, and a diving area for adults is a challenge. The water is very cold, but clean, and the area is spacious, perfect for swimming and taking beautiful photos. The som tam here is delicious. They also sell a la carte dishes and side dishes, but the prices are a bit steep. The taste is just okay, but it's worth it to enjoy the atmosphere. Parking is convenient. You can rent a car or motorbike to get around easily.
Entrance fee: 20,000 kip. Open daily.

Vang Vieng: A Trip Worth Repeating
This was a fun trip to Laos that makes me want to go back again and again.
- Beautiful nature, great weather, and lovely people.
- Plenty of activities to do.
- My favorite activity was kayaking because the water isn't too deep, and you can take stunning photos.
Going around 4-5 PM is perfect as the sunlight is beautiful, and you can enjoy the natural scenery along the river.
- Drinks are cheap.
- Perfect for travelers who love adventure and outdoor activities.
- A must-do is climbing Phanam Xai, a 350-meter trail. The view at the top is worth every effort—it's breathtaking. There's even a highlight spot for taking photos with a motorcycle.
Additionally, there are many other nearby attractions that are equally beautiful. To fully explore them all, you should stay for about three days.
Definitely going back again!

Blue Lagoon 2 is the best 🤟🏻🤟🏻 The water is very clear and cold. Jumping into the water is very scary. It took me a while to get up and jump 😂 But it's fun.
About 7 kilometers from Blue Lagoon 1 is Blue Lagoon 2. It is a fairly open area. You can see a panoramic view of limestone mountains. There is a lawn to sit and walk around. There are also many fun activities to do, such as ziplines, rope swings, and diving platforms. It's so cool.
The entrance fee is 20,000 kip per person. Come on a weekday. There are fewer people. There are only foreign tourists. It's not chaotic. It's beautiful beyond words.. You have to come and visit. Bring a picnic. The seats are free. You can stay all day for sure.

Today, we are going to Blue Lagoon 1. Anyone who frequently travels to Laos will definitely know about the Blue Lagoon, a highlight tourist attraction in Vang Vieng. Let me tell you that there are 3 Blue Lagoons in total in Vang Vieng. Each one is a naturally occurring emerald-colored pool surrounded by flora, a view of large limestone mountains, and many amenities. It is a place for relaxation where tourists often come to play in the water, especially during October-March, when the water is crystal clear, the scenery is beautiful, and the shadiest.
